Liberty Quarry Denied
The Planning Commission voted 4-1 to deny the project planned for just south of Temecula.
A plan to mine hills just south of Temecula was denied today.
The Riverside County Planning Commission voted 4-1 to deny mining permits and a sound ordinance exception for Liberty Quarry, a strip mining operation that was proposed for Temecula's southern border.
Commissioner James Porras cast the lone approving vote.

Can anyone on this forum DISPROVE the Environmental Impact Report and its assumptions of better trucking logistics and decreased pollution levels as a result "fewer" trucks through our city? Because that portion of the argument sounds legit to me...

You cannot prove nor disprove the EIR. If you listened to the meeting. Riverside County should be doing EIR, not the company. There will be perception that the EIR has been tampered. Anyway the EIR can not prove there will be less traffic.

Environmental Impact Reports can be lengthy, derisive, and misleading to reflect the view of the entity that's providing it by avoiding, not including, or down-playing certain aspects and concentrating on others. No matter what, the impact on this region (objectively or subjectively) is a serious threat. Who can afford to make mistakes or misjudgements of this importance that effect so many?... and then what?... cover it up??

Thank you planning commission. The idea of 1600 gravel truck loads per day to provide material for San Diego County construction was nauseating. We don't need our hills stripmined and desacrated and the community let its feelings be known. It was a tough battle and the people won. Thanks everyone who helped to defeat this dastardly project. It's in the hands of the supervisors now. Never give up.

Thank you Mark Macarro, Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians for saving Temecula!! We the residents could not have stopped Gary Nolan of Liberty Quarry, without Pechanga. Commisioner James Porras needs to get voted out at the next elections, DO NOT FORGET LAMES PORRAS'S NAME. He needs to find a different job.

I agree James Porras demonstrated poor taste on how he explained his decision. He just kicked himself out of office.

Let the creatures of the Mountain and the people sing, dance, and rejoice together. We DO NOT exist because of technology. IT exists, thrives, progresses, and endures because we do. ... The sword has been extracted from the Stone. Can we now say that a sleepy hollow called Temecula can "wag the dog" and champion the cause of the people?

Hooray, hooray, hooray! Shows you what citizens can do when they fight for whats right for their community. Now we must join the fight to save Wine Country from Jeff Stone's destruction of our beautiful area and turning Anza Rd into a freeway! Hotels, Bed and Breakfasts, activity centers. Noise, traffic, drunk drivers, loss of privacy and the rural life style we moved here for. For God Sakes, when will these investors including City Council, City Supervisors, Rancon developers and the like leave us alone. Anything to make a buck regardless of the lives they destroy. If he wins this will destroy Wine Country and the residents way of life by countrolling what we are allowed to do on our own property and force us to donate 80% of our property like they did in Los Alamos. WAKE UP PEOPLE ! This is another very important fight for our way of life and our freedoms. Join the fight!

Congratulations to everyone! It sure feels rewarding to be part of this community. For some reason I can't stop thinking about that fool (leroy I think) with his 'racist' comments agains the Native Americans being Ancient Asians or something like that... it was funny how stupid his comments were, but it was funnier that that was his way of proving his point. Liberty Quarry, next time send someone smarter on your 'behalf' lol

It has been a long, hard fight! Having the city and Pechanga come onboard has been invaluable, but it also took a few brave individuals to get this ball rolling. Thank you, original board members of S.O.S.Hills! You inspired alot of people including me. Thanks to all, no matter when you joined the fight! It's not over, however. We all need to stay the course! Onward!

Imagine with me if you will what our valley would look like with a Super Walmart where the Promenade Mall is, Zev Buffman's circus tent western in Old Town Temecula, RogersDale at the Golden Triangle in Murrieta and, finally, Liberty Quarry in our beautiful southwest hill. Citizen action is alive and will in Temecula. Thank you Sam Pratt, Jeff Stone, Kathleen Hamilton, the hundreds of citizens who wrote letters, marched, attended meetings and in so many many ways are vigilant and diligent for our valley.

Yes!!! Thanks to all the dedicated people who harnessed both their passion and energy to defeat this misguided project. I have respect for those commissioners who did not let money and propaganda influence their vote. Temecula is home to my family, and we plan on staying in this beautiful community. This is a good day, I must admit to being a little worried before the vote... Thank you!

Mr. Porras was re-appointed by County District Supervisor Benoit and his term ends June 2015. As Tomcyn pointed out, Mr. Porras lives in Indio. Granite has a facility in Indio (http://www.graniteconstruction.com/about-us/ca-scalifornia.cfm).
Indio's Mayor Pro Tem Glenn Miller is also quoted in Granite's anti-AB 742 press release (http://www.libertyquarryfacts.com/press/8-4-11-Granite-Construction.pdf).
Connecting the dots.... What is "adequate" (Mr. Porras used that term at least seven times when rubber-stamping his point-by-point approval of the Granite-funded EIR) for Indio may not necessarily be the same for Temecula-Rainbow-Fallbrook areas.
I suggest anyone who was/is upset by Mr. Porras's condescending attitude, wrong and potentially injurious decision, take two minutes and call the office of the elected official who appointed him. Just let them know who you are, and what you think:
County Supervisor John J. Benoit's (District 4) Palm Desert office: 73-710 Fred Waring Drive, Suite 222 • Palm Desert, CA 92260 • Phone: (760) 863-8211 • Fax: (760) 863-8905
We won this battle, for the moment. Granite has already said they will appeal. The war to remove Liberty Quarry from the community is not over. Granite has invested close to $10 million dollars on their project, and has recently hired two top lobbying/PR firms. This is not the time to become complacent.

Homer,
I am glad to see that our county officials can't be bought----now if the supervisors follow the planning commissions recommendations we in Temecula will be able to breath without face masks.
