Mattress Discounters in Temecula Experiences Small Fire

Fire sprinklers aid in containment.

Authorities are still unsure of what started a fire that broke out in a Temecula mattress store Monday evening.

Fire crews were called to Mattress Discounters at 40515 Winchester Road in Temecula at approx. 6:28 p.m. Monday. They found light smoke coming from the building.

The fire was discovered when a Mattress Discounters employee turned to see a window sign in flames, witnesses said. The window subsequently shattered and the flaming sign fell onto one of the showroom mattresses, causing it to set fire and activating the fire sprinklers, witnesses said.

Six engines with 24 firefighters were originally dispatched, said Jody Hagemann with the Riverside County Fire Department.

The fire sprinklers contained the fire to one mattress, Hagemann said.

The severity of the fire was downgraded from a structure fire, and some of the other resources were canceled.

However, several other mattresses and furniture pieces sustained smoke and water damage.

Temecula Engine 73 crew remained on scene to ensure complete containment and help clear residual water from the store.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
