Gusty winds are expected today in the Inland Empire, along with Riverside County's mountains and valleys, forecasters said.

A National Weather Service wind advisory is scheduled to remain in effect until 2 p.m. Winds of 20-30 mph with gusts of up to 45 mph are possible.

"Surface high pressure over the Great Basin will bring periods of gusty northeast to east winds near the coastal foothills into early this afternoon," the NWS advisory said.

The strongest gusts are expected through this morning near mountain ridge tops and along coastal mountain slopes into the inland valleys, and through and below passes and canyons.

Meteorologists cautioned that the wind could break tree limbs and make driving difficult, especially for motorists in high-profile vehicles. Drivers were advised to use extra caution.

Light winds are expected in the Coachella Valley, which is not covered by the NWS wind advisory.
