Postcard entries only will be accepted, tram officials said. People may enter as many times as they like, with one date per postcard. Postcards postmarked before Oct. 1 will not be accepted.

The contest's start today coincides with a forecast for cooler weather next week and the potential for snow at higher elevations above the San Gorgonio Pass.

The "overall weather pattern change this coming week to a more fall like pattern as a series of colder Pacific storms take aim at California," the National Weather Service advised Saturday afternoon.

"At this point in time, it looks as though the first of these storms will move into Southern California late Monday and Tuesday, bringing much cooler and gusty weather to the region as well as a slight chance of rain," a special weather statement issued at 1:55 p.m. Saturday said.

"However, a much stronger and colder storm will then move into the region late Wednesday and Thursday, bringing very gusty winds, colder temperatures, and potentially the first significant precipitation of the region.

Temperatures will fall 15 to 30 degrees below normal Wednesday and Thursday, with snow levels down to 7,000 feet elevation in the mountains, according to the Weather Service.

"That means the higher elevations could see a light dusting of snow," the special weather statement said. "Although it is still early, precipitation amounts could range between a quarter of an inch and three quarters of an inch across the coastal areas and valleys, with one to two inches possible in the mountains."

Tram ticket prices are $23.95 for adults, $21.95 seniors 62 and older, $16.95 for children ages 3 to 12. Toddlers 2-years old and under are free. A 10 percent military discount is available for individuals with valid military ID.
