Strong winds are expected today across Riverside County as a winter storm moves over the area.

"A strong cold front will move through the region tonight through early Wednesday," according to the National Weather Service. "Westerly winds will increase ahead of the front ... early today and become especially strong and gusty this afternoon and evening over the mountain ridge tops, desert slopes and foothills."

The agency issued a high wind warning for the mountains and Coachella Valley from 10 a.m. today to 4 a.m. Wednesday. During the warning period, sustained winds of 25 to 40 miles per hour and local gusts up to 60 mph were expected.

"The winds will make driving difficult, especially for motorists with high profile vehicles," an NWS advisory said. "Reduced visibility in blowing sand and dust may create hazardous driving conditions in the area. Watch for debris on roadways and broken tree limbs."

In Southwest Riverside County, expect a wind gusts up to 30 mph today and a 50 percent chance of rain tonight with the overnight low at 45. Wednesday’s chance of rain drops to 30 percents and wind gusts die to 20 mph.

By Thursday, expect mostly sunny skies, but frost is in the forecast overnight as the mercury dips to 34. –City News Service and Toni McAllister contributed to this report.
