Macarons 101

Over the past few weeks, Artisan’s Palate has seen a French Macaron fad take over (not to get confused with macaroons). We’ve had people coming in, calling the shop, and stalking us on Facebook for these seemingly exotic cookies.

With this spike in popularity, we believe it’s best if we educate the public so the next time you order a macaron you aren’t disappointed with what you receive.

First off, how do you say it?

Is it just a pronunciation thing like “tomato, tomato?” Aren't Macarons and Macaroons the same thing? Well… no. Macarons are completely different than Macaroons. Macaroons (Mack-a-roons) are little baked coconut mounds. Macarons (mah-kah-ROHNS) are little pastry sandwich cookies. The flavor profiles, texture, look, and just about everything about them are different; with the exception, of course, of the name.

What should I be looking for when I taste one?

The deliciousness of a good Macaron comes from the textural transitions in every bite. Biting a proper Macaron should start as a puffed crispy crust which then gives way to a chewy soft middle that slowly disintegrates into flavor and joy. Typically though (and unfortunately), after the first bite of your run of the mill French Macaron imposter, the entire thing concaves giving way to crumbs and disappointment; this is what makes them so difficult to make but great to enjoy when made correctly.

Now that we know what to expect of our artistic looking, delicate tasting pastry sandwiches, we should probably tackle the number one important thing about these old fashion wonders...

Where can I get one?

We have two flavors currently in stock but they are selling quickly. We have a Lemon and Almond currently, but we never know how long that’ll last. Hurry in and grab some on the go!
