Plight of Tortoise Subject of Sierra Club Meeting

The reptile is in danger due to desert development, an organizer says.

 

The travails of the Mojave Desert Tortoise is the planned topic of the next Sierra Club meeting.

The club is scheduled to get together at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Rancho California Water District headquarters, 42135 Winchester Rd.

"One reason this subject is so important is... not only the tortoise, but also by other endangered desert wildlife and vegetation (is) caught in the path of planned development and renewable solar energy projects," said Jim Mitchell, the club's spokesperson, in an email.

Kristin Berry, a research biologist, is scheduled to talk about the protected reptile, and a short documentary will be screened.

"We may also have on display a few live tortoises so you can get a close-up look," Mitchell said.
