Karl Strauss Brewing Company Opens in Temecula

On Tuesday, Karl Strauss Brewing Company officially opens its eighth and largest brewery restaurant following a four-month, nearly $2-million renovation to a Temecula building that formerly housed On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina.

Temecula is now home to San Diego-based Karl Strauss Brewing Company’s eighth and largest brewery-restaurant.

Karl Strauss Brewing Company officially opens Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 40868 Winchester Road. This follows a four-month, nearly $2-million renovation to the building that formerly housed On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina.

“The building sat empty for three years so we are excited to be here, it’s a great corner,” said Jeff Schroeder, vice president of Karl Strauss’ Brewery Restaurants division, about the location at the southeast corner of Winchester and Ynez roads.

Schroeder said the company joins a growing number of craft brewers in Temecula.

“This will increase awareness of the craft beer community,” Schroeder said. “The beer business is super familial, it is really more like a club than a competition.”

Founded in San Diego in 1989, Karl Strauss has brewery restaurants in Downtown San Diego, La Jolla, Sorrento Mesa, Carlsbad, Costa Mesa, Universal CityWalk and 4S Ranch.

Karl Strauss opened the 4S Ranch location, near Rancho Bernardo in San Diego County, in 2012 after nearly a decade spent increasing production and distribution.

The Temecula brewery restaurant offers an inroad to the Inland Empire, said Melody Daversa, public relations and advertising manager.

“We didn’t have anything in this area so this is exposing people to who we are,” Daversa said. "We are excited to join the Temecula brewing community and expose a new audience to Karl Strauss.”

The Temecula site is 9,860 square feet, seats 352 people and provides 150 jobs, according to Daversa.

In addition to the company’s hand-crafted beer—brewed in San Diego as well as onsite—locals can dine on Karl Strauss’ signature West Coast Pub Fare that includes a kids’ menu.

“We are open to 11 to 11,” Schroeder said. “We are not trying to be that nightclub that people stay at all night. We are exposing people to our craft beer.”
