Handouts gone wrong.

You may remember this viral photo. A year ago an NYPD officer spent over $100 of his own hard-earned pay to provide a pair of cold weather shoes and socks for a barefoot homeless man on his beat. While we should always applaud those who perform such random acts of kindness there is an other side of the charity coin illustrated, sadly, by the post-script to this particular compelling human interest story.

Obama chose Thanksgiving Day to promote a message criticizing food stamp reforms inherent in the recently-passed farm bill.  Of course, calling attention to government programs other than Obamacare is critical to his party's survival at this juncture. But this is also the start of the Christmas gift and charity-giving season.
