Barrels Set to Roll for Barrel Race

Racers pushing, pulling and driving wine barrels-turned-race buggies will go head-to-head at the mall Saturday.

The race is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at and is organized by the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival.

"This is not your rodeo-style barrel race, but a mini grand prix of barrels turned into soap box derby cars and pushed or pulled to a finish line," said Melody Brunsting, spokesperson for the festival.

The race is a kind of inauguration for the festival's new theme. "The use of wine barrels to age and store wine is centuries old," stated festival CEO and Chairman Scott Soares via an emailed announcement. "With our theme 'Barrels of Fun' this year, we wanted to have a little fun with the barrels."

Admission is free and open to the public. The races will be in the lower parking lot.

The top four racers or the best decorated race barrel will receive a pair of tickets to the festival, which is set for June 1-3. Their racer will also be on display in the Wine Gardens. Racing will be done in teams as the race cars cannot be motorized and must be either pushed or pulled through the race course.

The best decorated and winning racers will also represent the festival at the City of Temecula’s Fourth of July parade.
