Countywide Memorial Day DUI Arrests Announced

The Temecula Police Department made seven arrests DUI arrests during the Avoid the 30 campaign.

A countywide crackdown on drunken and drug-impaired drivers netted 202 arrests over the Memorial Day weekend, authorities said today.

The Riverside County Avoid the 30 campaign -- named for the number of area law enforcement agencies involved -- began Friday morning and wrapped up at 11:59 p.m. Monday, during which two sobriety checkpoints and 18 saturation patrols were conducted in 15 cities.

The same type of anti-DUI effort resulted in 230 arrests during Memorial Day weekend 2012. Unlike last year's campaign, however, there was one DUI- related fatality this year. A man allegedly ran a red light in Norco and plowed into a 23-year-old motorist, inflicting fatal injuries.

The suspect, 29-year-old Joshua Peerman of Palm Springs, was arrested on suspicion of DUI gross vehicular manslaughter on Sunday morning.

The Avoid campaign coincided with the California Highway Patrol's "maximum enforcement period," during which all available officers hit the streets to catch lawbreakers.

A total 235 traffic citations were issued between Friday and Monday night, for everything from speeding to failure to wear a seatbelt, according to the CHP.

The agency said 45 traffic collisions were reported or investigated on county roads and highways in the metropolitan area.

Another Avoid program is slated for the week of July 4.
