Gas Prices Continue to Drop

The average gallon of gas in the Inland Empire costs $4.18, an official report shows.

 

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in the Inland Empire decreased today for the 36th consecutive day, falling three-tenths of a cent to $4.184, its lowest amount since Feb. 22.

The average price in Riverside and San Bernardino counties is 4.2 cents less than one week ago, 16.6 cents lower than one month ago and 2 cents below what it was one year ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

The average price has dropped 19.5 cents over the past 36 days, including six-tenths of a cent on Tuesday. The streak of declines is the longest since a 37-day streak that ended on Dec. 23.

"Wholesale prices dropped steeply in March after that sharp 50-cent-plus price increase we experienced in February and retail prices are still coming down slowly in response to that decrease,'' Marie Montgomery of the Automobile Club of Southern California told City News Service.

The sharp February price increase was caused by a combination of rising oil prices and reduced supply stemming from the closure of some California refineries for maintenance and a major fire at the Cherry Point refinery in Blaine, Wash.
