Scattered Thunderstorms Expected

The storms can cause sudden and extreme conditions, such as flash flooding, hail, strong winds and lightning.

Scattered thunderstorms were expected in the area today, according to the National Weather Service.

Meteorologists cautioned people to head indoors during the storms, which were expected to strike suddenly.

“Some of these storms can be severe and can produce large hail, flash flooding, strong gusty winds and frequent deadly lightning,” the weather service stated via an online announcement. “Stay indoors when a thunderstorm is approaching or is nearby. If caught outdoors, seek for the nearest shelter.”

A “monsoonal surge” heading to the region from the southeast is causing the weather, according to the weather service.

Wind gusts were expected to reach 20 mph through today and tomorrow.

Otherwise, the weather will be hot and humid for the rest of the week, with highs in the upper 80s and lows in the low 60s and upper 50s.

Lighting ignited several fires in the region, though nothing in Temecula was reported as of 3:30 p.m. today, according to Melody Hendrickson, a spokesperson for the Riverside County Fire Department.
