Temecula Filmmaker Wins Big in Vegas Festival

John Hess wrote and directed "Pitch Black," wins Best Independent Film of 2011 at the Las Vegas Film Festival.

A Temecula filmmaker won Best Independent Film for 2011 at a festival in Las Vegas.

John Hess took the award home from the Las Vegas Film Festival for his film “Pitch Black.” The festival ran July 12-15.

The film tells the story of Haley Grant who crashes into a car driven by a psychotic killer.

At the scene of the crash, the killer beats his latest victim to death in front of Grant. She escapes a similar fate when police and fire arrive scaring away the killer.

Tthe concussion from the accident leaves Haley in a very fragile state - her vision is blurred, and she is sensitive to light. The killer manages to track her down, but she is able to draw him into “Pitch Black” where she has the advantage.

Hess’ passion has been film since his days at UC Riverside where he obtained his business degree.

He began Creative Industries Media Group, a full-service commercial film production company. He is also the co-founder of one of the Web’s most influential film production sites, www.FilmmakerIQ.com.  

When he’s not behind the camera, he plays a screaming trumpet with local big band group The Robert Holts Orchestra.
