City Councilman Chuck Washington was chosen to be Temecula's mayor for 2012.
He was picked by his fellow council members earlier this month at the following a long tradition of promoting the former mayor pro-tem to the higher position at the beginning of each year.
Washington served on the Murrieta City Council until he moved to Temecula. He was elected to the in 2003.

Ron Roberts will relinquish the title of mayor and reclaim the title of "councilman," which he held before being chosen to serve as the mayor pro-tem for 2010.
The position of mayor is mostly ceremonial, according to several city officials. The mayor conducts the council meetings and otherwise attends social events representing the city.
