Temecula Jaywalker Hit, Killed

He was walking on Highway 74 in Homeland when a 17-year-old struck him with his van.

A Temecula man was hit by a van while jaywalking and killed in Homeland.

The crash happened at 11:36 p.m. Sunday on Highway 74 at Nauman Avenue.

The victim -- whose name was not yet released -- tried to cross from the south, according to the California Highway Patrol.

"The pedestrian was not at a marked crosswalk," said CHP Officer Nathan Baer in a written announcement.

A 17-year-old driver from Hemet was driving east when he hit the victim with his 2002 Dodge Caravan. "The pedestrian stepped into the path of the (van)," Baer said. "The driver of the (van) was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian. The (victim) was thrown to the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene."
