Cinco de Mayo Fun Facts

Here are a few things to know about May 5 and why it's celebrated in Mexico and the United States.

Cinco de Mayo marks May 5, 1862, when the Mexican army won the Battle of Puebla in the Franco-Mexican War. The holiday has become a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture in the United States and no less so in Temecula.

Here are a few other facts about Cinco de Mayo:

  • In Puebla, one of Mexico's 31 states with a capital city of the same name, Cinco de Mayo is known as El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (The Day of the Battle of Puebla).
  • While Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday in Mexico, it is mainly observed in Puebla. In the U.S. it has become a popular holiday to celebrate Mexican culture.
  • Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals.
  • May 5 is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day. That holiday takes place on September 16.
  • One of the largest Cinco de Mayo events in the U.S. is Fiesta Broadway in Los Angeles.

Wow Ms. Juarez, it just kills me to read your post. I am assuming you immigrated here because if you are a product of our California school system with your poor spelling and grammer then Lord Help us. Glad your brother enjoyed the party. Nothing like falling down drunk on your sister's grass to know you had a good time!

Can't bring myself to celebrate a Mexican Holiday. Sorry. Just too saturated with Mexican culture as it is. Proud American here. Not interested in Mexico except the occasional margarita at El Torito's, even that is a stretch at times.

V.weeds do you not eat Mexican food? I celebrate the life we live regardless what the background is when it comes around. Get over your self

Ha Ha Olivia! I celebrate life just fine without falling down drunk over a Mexican Holiday . Just because I don't celebrate it, does not mean you have to judge me for it. This is America - you are free to enjoy your tacos and margaritas without fear of government reprisal. I choose to CELEBRATE what makes THIS COUNTRY where so many choose to immigrate! You are free to enjoy your culture. AMazing isn't it?! Truly a gift to Celebrate, uphold and praise isn't it? Without freedom, you might as well go back to Mexico.

Dude , Did you know that Jews and Christians consider pride a sin. A proud American (a sinful American)..Same as a proud Russian , Chinese , etc (a sinful Russian , Chinese , etc.). A Proud Earthling here . That's GC. ..none of this manufactured "country crap". I am an inhabitant of Earth, just as you are Dude. And we both live in a manufactured ghetto called , The United States of America. PUTIN lives in the manufactured ghetto called called Russia. But he too is an inhabitant of Earth. Homo Sapiens have a hard time understanding they are all inhabitants of Earth, and live in manufactured ghettos they call countries.

Psh, I have no idea who you are talking about. As a 30 year old American I regularly celebrate national armistice day! Boo the Kaiser!

I say we should never miss an opportunity to have a good time. On Cinco De Mayo, I'm Mexican, on St. Patty's I'm Irish. Why not? We should have a BBQ/Drinker holiday for every culture. Every Month I say we as a country should just pick a culture and celebrate it by drinking heavily, hanging out with friends and enjoying some ethnic fare. Cinco De Mayo is not a Mexican holiday, its an American holiday with tacos.

@Galactic Cannibal - Dude, just think, because you live in AMERICA, you can actually have an opinion. If you are living in a ghetto then I suggest you do something about cleaning it up,unless of course you are happy that way. Once again, you are FREE to do as you like. WHich even means you are FREE to make things better of course... WE are ALL CO-INhabitants of EARTH, but if you search the globe you are less likely to find any other NATION that will allow you to think and feel as you please for there are plenty of Dictatorship Regimes that will force your fate. CURRENTLY AMERICA is a FREE COUNTRY and if you want to roll over and let go of your freedoms to become a global inhabitant, (maybe that pot you are smoking makes you not care...)move to a third world country (like Mexico) pack your bags now and move out No One is keeping you here! Amazing isn't it? You are FREE TO CHOOSE YOUR FATE! Take that for granted and you'll find out the hard way how it sucks.
