Local Girl Scout Hosts Tennis Camp For Youth, Earns Gold Award

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the Highest Achievement in Girl Scouting

Aubrey McCoy’s passion for tennis is remarkable.

The recent Girl Scout Gold Award earner and high school student created a two-day, after-school tennis camp for middle school youth at the Boys and Girls Club of Murrieta on August 22 and 23, 2013. Aubrey gathered six volunteers from the Mesa Tennis Team and a family friend who flew down from Sacramento to help with instruction and overall organization.

Aubrey introduced tennis to disadvantaged kids who would not ordinarily have the opportunity to play the sport; the kids learned tennis basics, such as warming up, stretching, racquet handling, drills and tennis vocabulary. During scheduled break periods, Aubrey provided healthy fruit snacks, water and sports drinks to the participants. Local teens from her high school also donated time to help run the sports clinic.

Mentoring twelve middle school kids has taught Aubrey patience and given her the confidence to handle any challenge that may arise.

Due to the success of the clinic, the Murrieta Boys & Girls Club, in conjunction with the Mesa Tennis Team, plans to make this a regular event and a local tennis pro has even agreed to continue to mentor students who participated.
