Cuts on Health Care for Sick Kids?

Is denying benefits to illegal aliens the answer to saving health care programs for chronically ill children?

Yes, chronically ill children might be getting their health coverage cut thanks to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. Read the article by .

The last line of the article was the most telling on how short sighted these cuts will be:

Harrington said the reduction in general fund support would translate to about 10,000 fewer visits to the clinics, likely resulting in patients seeking treatment in crowded emergency rooms.

So hospitals now have to pick up the slack? And where to they get their funds? From charging exhorbitant fees to insurers. And then insurers raise their premium rates. It's a no-win situation for all involved and, to me, is a huge illustration as to why health care and insurance reform is so needed.

Now, I've been reading comments on this article and a few people feel that cutting all benefits to illegal aliens might save money, so there would be more funds available for the programs like the one in the above article, but I disagree.

Cutting benefits will not keep illegal immigrants from coming to the US. Many do get jobs, spend money and pay sales taxes. The fact that employers continue to hire them, even when it's illegal, is a huge incentive for them to come here.

This study shows how immigrants -- legal and illegal -- contribute to Arizona's economy.  I couldn't find a study relating to California, but I would think it's similar.  It's worth taking a look by clicking here.

Immigration is a complex issue, and I don't think the answers are an easy black-and-white on that subject. But when it comes to cutting health benefits to chronically ill children, I think we can all agree.  There has to be a better way to save money.
