For the Jewish people, the time from Rosh HaShana to Yom Kippur, "The Days of Awe," are the holiest period of the year.
On Rosh HaShana we ask G-d for blessings for the new year. And then, on Yom Kippur comes the final reckoning, when G-d delivers his judgment, and hopefully writes us in the Book of Life for a Good and Sweet Year ("Le'shana Tova Tikoteiv Vetichoteim.")
Often referred to as the "High Holidays," this period will be celebrated by the Chabad Jewish Center in Temecula starting at sundown on Sunday and concluding with a Break the Fast meal after sundown on Sept. 26.
The complete schedule of services and events is listed below.
Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz, spiritual leader of the local Chabad, stressed the friendly nature of the group.
"We offer a welcoming service to all, regardless of background or affiliation. Our style is friendly and welcoming. We seek to make all our attendees as comfortable as possible.
"The services are conducted with the beginner in mind. Many of the prayers are read in English and a running commentary accompanies the entire service, including stories, inspirational thoughts, teachings about the prayers. The service includes much festive as well as meditative singing."
The rabbi added, "If you are looking for a place to spend the High Holidays consider Chabad Jewish Center where prayers are warm, the people friendly, and where everyone feels at home."
While there is a cost for the services, most especially for the Break the Fast meal, Hurwitz stresses that no one will be turned away because of inability to pay, although donations are accepted according to one's means.
The Chabad Center of Temecula, 41789 Nicole Lane, Ste. B-7, serves the region from Temecula to Lake Elsinore, including Murrieta, Wildomar and surrounding areas.
