Alleged Elderly Woman, Dog Killer Pleads Not Guilty

He has four prior drunken driving convictions, court records state.

An alleged drunken driver who allegedly ran a vehicle over an elderly woman and her dog pleaded not guilty.

Harry Shane Scholes, 55, of Temecula, denied guilt during a Friday hearing to charges of murder, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence while driving under the influence of controlled substances and driving on a suspended or revoked license, according to court records.

He was held on $1 million bail, according to jail records.

The fatal crash happened around 8:45 a.m. on July 18 on Via Cordoba when Scholes allegedly jumped the curb in his pickup truck and ran over 87-year-old Charlotte Boyce and her dachshund, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The dog died instantly, and Boyce died in a hospital, according to the sheriff's department.

Scholes was convicted of four charges of driving under the influence of controlled substances in 2006, according to court records.
