Alleged Smugglers Caught With Meth

The Mexican man and American woman were arrested, a Border Patrol official says.

A Mexican man and an American woman were arrested on suspicion of smuggling meth.

The 37-year-old man -- whose name was unavailable -- and Vanesa Sugeili Chavez, 20, were arrested around Wednesday morning on suspicion of felony charges related to drug smuggling, according to Scott Simon of the California Border Patrol.

The pair was driving north on Interstate 15 in a white 1994 Cadillac when agents stopped them.

A drug-sniffing dog was summoned to search the car, and the animal signaled it found something in the front of the vehicle.

Agents brought the vehicle and the suspects to the Temecula Border Patrol checkpoint for a search, and they found 15.65 pounds -- or $313,000 worth -- of methamphetamine.
