Well said Jeff Frank!

I Agree with everyone and no reason to fight everyone is right. 1. Watch, hold, put a leash on your child if they still like to take off. I would have never said ok to a leash back when I was raising my girls, but now at this point anythng that saves a life do IT. 2. Drivers, be careful, be aware, especially in parking lots, residential streets, no matter what the speed limit is. In my neighborhood because we do have so many of all ages out playing, running out behind cars on bikes, skateboards, and some impossible to see if sitting on the skateboard, I go about 8 mph. But I see other drivers come flying around off of Margarita onto our culdesac, then make a right on the next street up to get further into the area, with no thought to all the kids out playing. I cringe 50x's watching these people as I am out there with my grandson waiting for a child to get hit :/ Its everyones part to keep children safe, or anyone walking for that matter of any age, drive carefully, do not speed or drive wrecklessly, even on the streets and freeways. Watch yourself as much as you can while you walk, your children are with you, keep them in the stroller even if they don't like it!! We all have to work together on all these vehicle deaths we have been having, including pedestrians on bikes, skateboards, motorcycles, and now this baby. This is a small City, this many should NOT be happening in town, on the freeway, parking lots, no way.

It's kinda spooky. Like it's all leading up to something. Creepy. But that's just my paranoia. I think as the city grows, we'll see more of this kind of thing happening. I remember when that guy in Redhawk got plastered to the curb when he wasn't watching traffic and basically ran into a turning car while listening to his music. This stuff isn't anything new, we're just seeing more of it. I think all of Brenda's suggestions are great. if only more people would come here to read them. I will pass this accident on in church so maybe prevention can be talked about more.

I was training clients in Temecula when this happen! around 6 pm my next client walks in to workout and tells me about this sad accident. It happen right in front of my eyes he said to me! I heard the sound the body been hit! I turned around and see the body under the car he told me! I don't even know this child but man It affected me to the point that I can't sleep! my grandfather killed a 5 year old that came out of parked cars, it was instant death! my grandfather was affected so bad he ended up in a mental hospital to treat his mental trauma! the 5 year old father came to see my grandfather to make him feel better letting him know it was his foult for letting his child unattended. This should be a lessen to all drivers out there keep your eyes open at all times Temecula is to busy and TRAFIC is getting really bad! with that said I will try to rest now good night..

My daughters and I were in the nail salon. I heard it happen. I feel for the mom. My 6 year old never leaves my side and now especially after this.

I have a buissnes in Oldtown try crossing 5th street at anytime you will get hit, drivers look at you as you try and step off the curb with my son going to candy shop, People actually honk there horn or yell because they think they have the right away???? Did they not have to read traffic law before getting drivers license or are they giving them away at DMV, buissest non 4 way stop
Mike July 06, 2012 at 03:20 PM
City put in 4 way stops For themselves to get in and out Of city hall , they have them every where in old town except the busiest intersection that has , Madeline's burges, edge, sweet shop you see frustrated families at the curb standing there for minutes as cars blow through, this is not rocket science.... Put a damn 4 way stop in front street is not a short cut for a poorly designed road way
Jeff July 06, 2012 at 03:56 PM
5th and Front definitely needs something. We often stand there waiting for cars to stop and no one does. You have to step out into traffic hope someone stops for you. Sure doesn't make old town walkable. I've even stopped for people to cross the street only to have motorists frustrated with me. We should be advocating for a car free Front Street. There is ample unused parking in the parking structure on a daily basis…even on Saturdays. Did you know the City of Temecula is considering buying an electric golf cart to shuttle people from the parking garage to Front Street? As crazy of an idea that is I think they should do it...if and only if they make Front Street car free.

pls.... i know the parents of the child and he is the ONLY child. The mother loves him so much and the dad always talks so fondly of this child. Pls do not judge as the family are very much broken hearted by what happened...
David Shisler July 06, 2012 at 09:17 PM
There are a lot of cities that have one-way streets, and I would think it would making crossing a street, or pulling out easyer only having to watch traffic from one direction. Temecula traffic engineer thanked me for the suggestion but said the city traffic is safer the way it is, and traffic speeds are slower the way we have it. What do I know.
Jeff July 06, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Traffic speeds are slower? Where? As for old town…I think there is so much potential to be a great walking district. Businesses should be screaming for a safer more walkable old town. We now have people cutting through using Front Street not spending a dime. Cars do not equal commerce.
TVOR July 06, 2012 at 11:04 PM
I think there need to be a couple of crosswalks in old town. Like at the stop signs.
Raeann July 07, 2012 at 01:42 AM
Another suggestion is to close Old Town to through traffic and make it pedestrian only...the way Old Town San Diego is. Visitors park in the parking lots around the perimeter and walk or get shuttled in. This would allow all to have a safe and enjoyable time visiting our beautiful Old Town!

Barring any alcohol involvement, even sober drivers can be involved in loss of life. The report ( http://temecula.patch.com/articles/child-killed-by-truck-temecula-resident) states "The boy apparently darted out in traffic" It is not possible to protect everyone at all times under all circumstances. I am saddened by this event.
Timber July 11, 2012 at 04:53 AM
"are they giving them away at DMV" ? YES they are. It does not take much skill to receive a DL in order to wield a multi-ton object around. Safety and Liberty intersect here. Full safety requires banning the automobile. Liberty will not allow that.
K4299R July 11, 2012 at 05:05 AM
Yes a vehicle can be moving slow and still kill a small child. This will sound morbid, but if you hit them at the right angle you can cause all kinds of damage to their poor little bodies. If it was an adult, they wouldn't have been injured too much, a kid with a big truck, more severe injuries.
Julie July 14, 2012 at 04:42 AM
I see a lot of comments in paper and on patch regarding this child not being watched by mother and not drivers fault. I know a close family member and this little boy was not in the middle of the road...he didn't dart in front of truck, yes he got away from mom and anyone with kids knows this happens she let go of his hand to take a picture by the statue that he got excited to see...he bolted to the car and made it safely to the back of the car....this driver was TEXTING and going too fast as the video show from surveillance cameras......please be careful in judging when you don't know the facts...I am sure the driver is devastated as well and my heart goes out to all.....the ideas I read about the traffic changes in old town are great...we need to do something...
3j July 14, 2012 at 05:09 AM
My heart goes out to the family and driver. All must feel terrible guilt. I was at the farmers market a few weeks ago, and the mother was chatting with a friend while the kids were unsupervised and one step from the street. It only takes a second to step off the curb and into traffic. Mothers make sure your kids are safe. Drivers make sure you are safe and expect the unexpected. Temecula has some of the rudest drivers I've ever encountered. Many get impatient when they have to wait for someone to back out of their parking spot or driveway. Many honk if you take two seconds to go when a light turns green. Nobody lets you merge in front of them, being cut off is the norm. I live off Margarita and many people go too fast in a residential. When I drive the speed limit or lower in my neighborhood I get tailgated, honked at and sometimes even yelled at. They pass me and race off as if we were on the I-15. They act as if kids should not be out in their own neighborhood playing and are inconvenienced when they have to wait for them to cross the street in a crosswalk. Often times they don't even wait for the kids to get out of the crosswalk before entering the intersection. People need to realize we live here and start acting like a community. Show some compassion for your neighbor and practice acts of kindness when on the road.
Callitlikeitis July 14, 2012 at 05:40 AM
Julie ... You DONT have a clue as to what really happened.
Brenda July 14, 2012 at 06:11 AM
3j, I also live off Margarita and a few of us actually were talking about putting a chalk board type thing up and listing the one car in particular who speeds through here every single night while all the kids are out riding bikes, skooters, all that. People have yelled at her, to no avail, they have tried flagging her down to no avail, so hopefully she wll notice OUR SIGN. She has whipped that car onto and off of Georgetown one too many times. There is a point you have to do something anything to stop it before a child does get killed. Hett, just trying to get on and off of Margarita in my car is taking my life into my own hands. Its nearly impossible even with the lights changing because everyone is flying the second the lights turn green, and sliding thru all the red lights, so there is NEVER a break in that Margarita traffic. Then add the mall, all the restaurants, the school students, Lowes..........and yes the attitude of our drivers. Like someone said above, rude, driving fast, texting, whatever else they can do while driving, speeding, wreckless with no care that they might kill a child or someone else in the next few minutes because they are not paying attention. As I said higher up, I have never lived in such a small city, this is the first, and I have never in my life seen so many deaths by auto's. Whether its drunk drivers, wreckless, freeway mess, all of them and there must be a reason? Speed limits? Traffic going thru town to avoid freeway?
TVOR July 14, 2012 at 05:31 PM
Brenda, you can ask the police department to do extra patrol in your area so they can catch the speeder in action.
Jeff July 14, 2012 at 06:09 PM
Maybe we need to DIY some traffic calming in our neighborhoods. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/home_blog/2012/07/traffic-slowing-methods.html I'd also like to add that we need to get involved if we really want change. I do think the conversation here and elsewhere is great, but I doubt local officials are reading comments in our local papers. Attend meeting and call or email our council members. Make your voice heard. Get involved!
Brenda July 14, 2012 at 06:34 PM
Did that with a motorcycle rider before but his leaving for work time was more consistant, we cant "hear" the woman in the car, just see her when she comes in from work at different times in the early evening. The motorcycle rider was clockwork, 630am flying through here. Called PD, they had him the next morning, he was cuffed(think he got a wreckless driving in there)and he has not riden the motorcycle since expect to blast through the nieghborhood once in a while fast, and then parks it before cops get here. RAWR. Making sure we know he is still here. But at least he will not hit someone walking to school. I will let you know if anything happens with this gal. I cant waits, its been 2 years just trying to stop her and ask her nicely to slow down "see all the 20+ kids playing Lady"???
Brenda July 14, 2012 at 06:37 PM
True Frank, WE DO NEED to get involved. See exactly WHAT it will take to get these people to SLOW DOWN, drive with caution, not wreckless and aware of everything around you, and put down any types of devices that do NOT have anything to do with driving a car. NOT even using a GPS, no excuse, you can pull over, program in the info and let it "speak".
TVOR July 21, 2012 at 07:18 PM
I have often been tempted to put a dummy of a child on a skateboard and push it out into the street when someone is speeding down the street to drive the point home. Imagine what it would do to a person's perspective if they though they actually ran over a child. Unfortunately that is an idea that would get someone in big trouble probably.
T120Dude July 21, 2012 at 07:36 PM
That would make a great YouTube prank, such a video would be viral and maybe end up on national television and shows like Tosh.O. Unfortunately, that is also stupid because the car can receive significant damage and the driver can be injured or killed depending on his/her reaction. I have often thought of doing the same to my classmates, especially the girls who are texting and driving at fast rates of speed near kids playing on the street. I think a water balloon filled with beef blood and screaming will do though since they dont pay attention to what is happening anyways.
T120Dude July 21, 2012 at 07:37 PM
My above comment is a reference to TVOR's comment, not the incident.
Brenda July 21, 2012 at 08:00 PM
I agree with this "prank" TVOR and can think of one lady right off the bat I would do this to. I just yelled at her the other day as she roared down the street, in her snazzy black sports car, into her garage, at the end of our culdesac, "mexican" type music blaring, cigarette in her left hand dangling out the open window, and she didn't even hear me. If she had hit a child she would NEVER know it! All of the kids play at the end of the culdesac as that is safest right? You would think for that reason alone she would STOP. Monday morning I have got to call the police and get something done about her as I am just sick she is going to hit one of the kids on foot, skooters, skateboards, bikes, electric cars, etc. I think this idea isa good one TVOR if I had all day to stand out there and wait for her to come in or out :/
Jeff July 21, 2012 at 08:50 PM
I would love to see more enforcement of existing traffic laws. I've spoke with TPD on several occasions and they do not want residents to feel targeted or the tickets seen as "revenue generators". Considering the amount of traffic that rolls through Temecula on a daily basis there are very few tickets written. People speed, text, drive reckless, illegally park, etc. because there is little fear of actually getting a ticket. You ever notice how everyone becomes the model driver when a police car is near? We need more patrols. Patrols on foot, bike and car. Either that or everyone could just start behaving like they aren't the center of the universe.
Brenda July 22, 2012 at 02:43 AM
Jeff for some reason your comment brought to mind the annoying and dangerous problem of the kids getting out of Chap HS. Their parents being a part of it. The parents are driving down Winchester and STOP in the slow lane to pick them up from the sidewalk area, to avoid parking etc.!!! Also the kids running across Winchester getting to their parents car waiting in the slow lane, or driving very slowly for the kid to get to the car!!!!!!! I cannot believe I have forgotten to mention these serious and dangerous stunts that the parents pull and have the kids do it, all to avoid parking in the mess, getting in and out of the mess of traffic. And ya know, I NEVER see police presense after school, or before school for that matter to catch all the kids standing outside of Riteaid finishing their power drink with vodka in it. :/ Parents are oblivious sometimes of even putting their child in danger and will do it just to save a sec stuck in traffic. I agree, more patrols, more on the main drags where the speeding is the WORSE and wreckless driving. I see an officer when they are speeding all together up Margarita, err down too for a call. Otherwise, dont see em./
