Border Patrol: Mexican National Caught Smuggling…

CHP Makes 47 Arrests for Suspected Drunken Driving

The arrests were made during the New Year's weekend.

Nearly 50 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during a New Year's weekend anti-DUI crackdown in the Riverside County, authorities said Wednesday.

The California Highway Patrol's "maximum enforcement period," which ran from Friday night to Tuesday night, netted 47 DUI arrests on highways and county roads patrolled by officers from the Riverside CHP office.

During the previous New Year's MEP, 28 people were arrested. That campaign, however, was a day shorter.

Between Friday and Tuesday, there were 27 collisions locally, 13 of them involving injuries, according to Officer Steve Carapia. He said 447 citations were issued for a variety of infractions.

The MEP coincided with the Riverside County Avoid the 30 task force's end-of-year holiday crackdown, which began Dec. 14 and wrapped up last night.

By Thursday, the Avoid campaign had racked up 466 DUI-related arrests, according to Riverside police Sgt. Skip Showlater, the Avoid coordinator.

Final figures were expected out Wednesday night or Thursday.

Great comments Rayne. Others who believe their rights are being stepped on, or violated will hate on you in comments, but if it saves lives then you are saying the right stuff. That is all I care about. I dont care if I have to drive thru check points, if I get pulled over once a day for swerving, cause I dont drink, so I am ok. I do not understand the broo haha over trying to stop DUI's from killing our family and friends because they are not smart enough to stay out of their car if they are drunk. If its true, and these devices do actually get put in every single car, which I have been writing about for years since I saw the first one come out, I am so happy, I just cant even express it in words. Me at a loss for words is a /BIG THING.

...because ONLY the dead from drunk drivers are there ?..... Logic fail.....

Checkpoints are voluntary and I withhold MY consent to participate BECAUSE I am doing nothing wrong. You are free to participate and I would not chide you for it because that is your Right.

Set DUI aside a minute. People you should never be willing to turn your head the other way when your government crosses a line. (And I'm not saying they are with the check point) The attitude of it may be unconstitutional but if you’re not guilty you don't need to worry about it is a display of ignorance on a grand scale.

Tom, Not ignorance at all. Its just not something I am going to add to the ole stress table, and also if I am not drinking it doesnt bother me at all. We have far bigger fish to fry in this country as far as our rights and things that have been done to our country and continue to be done without us doing anything about it or thinking we cant do anything about it. If people could get as upset about the illegal problem we continue to carry around on our backs like a Vegas Casino, cha ching, cha ching, and getting business's back into the USA who do business IN THE USA, we might stand a chance. A DUI Check point is not going to make or break my rights but it might prevent someone from being killed by a drunk driver.
