FBI to Assume Investigation Into Fallbrook Family Missing Since 2010

Joseph and Summer McStay and sons Gianni and Joseph Jr. were last seen Feb. 4, 2010.

The San Diego Sheriff's Department turned its investigation of a missing Fallbrook family over to the FBI, it was announced today.

Joseph and Summer McStay and sons Gianni and Joseph Jr. probably moved to Mexico freely, according to sheriff's Lt. Glenn Giannantonio.

They were last seen Feb. 4, 2010, and the family's 1996 Isuzu Trooper was found abandoned in San Ysidro near the border four days later.

Despite hundreds of tips, sheriff's detectives have been unable to find them, Giannantonio said.

"There has been no contact or communication from them since February of 2010," he said.

Because the case involves another sovereign country, the FBI would be the primary investigative agency going forward. He said the sheriff's department would provide a supporting role if asked for help.

Joseph and Summer McStay are 42 and 45, respectively, and Gianni and Joseph Jr. are 5 and 6, respectively.

Anyone with more information about the McStays was asked to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8744.
