Fire Station Evacuated After Someone Delivers 'Bomb'

The device was discovered at an empty lot.

Someone took a suspicious pipe from an empty lot to a Temecula fire station, which was evacuated as a bomb squad was called in to determine it was an old military flare.

A sheriff's sergeant said a resident picked up what was thought to be a hazardous device and delivered it shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday to the neighborhood Cal Fire station, in the 30000 block of Pauba Road.

Sheriff's deputies were called in, and then the bomb squad, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Joseph Greco said.

The immediate area around the station was evacuated long enough for bomb squad technicians to confirm the pipe was really a military grade flare, which they took to later destroy, Greco said.

Deputies again stressed that the public should leave any suspicious- looking device where it is found, not touch them and call for help.
