High-Speed Chase Ends in Crash

The suspect abandoned a female passenger and tried to run away before being ambushed and arrested.

A high-speed chase ended in a crash, an arrest and a hospitalization today.

The suspect, who was not yet identified, was fleeing from law enforcement around 4 p.m. east on the wrong side of Winchester Road in his black Nissan Versa SL when he ran a red light at Margarita Road and was hit by a gray Dodge Ram, according to witnesses on the scene.

The suspect's car spun out and hit the northeast curb in front of . The driver then jumped out and ran into the tire store, abandoning his female passenger, who lay unconscious, said witnesses.

"He bolted through, went around back and tried going through the back door," said Mike Pyle, who was in the store at the time.

The suspect was panicked as he tried to get out of the shop, Pyle said.

"He was scared, you could see he didn't want to get caught."

When the suspect ran through the back door, he was ambushed by a sheriff's deputy and taken into custody, he said.

The passenger was treated on the scene for heroin overdose and rushed to a hospital, according to a sheriff's deputy.

Deputies on the scene declined to comment on the reason for the chase.

Traffic was snarled and several lanes were blocked as investigators combed the scene for evidence, at one point discovering a knife.

Charlie Couarrubias, a Stockton resident and the driver of the truck, said he and his girlfriend were unharmed. "Just thank God I'm okay and my girlfriend is fine," he said.

Eastbound Winchester Road was closed, but it reopened around 6 p.m.
