Lake Elsinore DUI Checkpoint Nets Two Arrests

The Lake Elsinore Police Department has a no-tolerance policy when it comes to drinking and driving, says Sgt. Peter Giannakakos of the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station.

Friday night the Lake Elsinore Police Department conducted a DUI/driver's license checkpoint and nabbed two people – one on suspicion of drunk driving, the other for suspected vehicle theft. The checkpoint, which started at 7 p.m., was located at the intersection of Mission Trail and Malaga.

“The goal of the DUI checkpoint was to deter impaired and suspended drivers and raise public awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol,” said Sgt. Peter Giannakakos of the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station.

William Watkins, 22, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, while William Huntsinger, 31, was picked up on suspicion of vehicle theft, the sergeant reported.

According to Giannakakos, stats from Friday night’s checkpoint include:

  • 1,300 vehicles passed through the checkpoint
  • 60 vehicles were diverted to secondary screening
  • 8 people were given field sobriety tests
  • 1 DUI suspect was arrested
  • 4 vehicles stored or impounded for 30 days
  • 16 unlicensed and suspended drivers sent to court

sick and tired of all the people complaining that police have these check points. Have you ever had someone die by the hands of some damn drunk? it's not fun! It is easy, stay off the damn roads if your going to drink. Maybe this check point cost us extra dollars but one less idiot is on the road because of it....

I agree with you Sick&tired. Too bad you will always have arm chair commandos like Major, who do nothing but sit at home & complain. If they had some real world experience, then I'm sure their tunes would change! Sorry about your loss.....

You "can't stand the morons" TA because you are obviously LE and think everyone's a criminal until proven innocent. You've forgotten that you're job is TO PROTECT AND TO SERVE. You aren't doing that when you arbitrarily judge your fellow citizens to be "morons" (used twice by you) because we don't appreciate your brusk manner, and your heavy-handed tactics and talking to us like we're idiots at your "check points". If you treated everyone with an attitude that we are law-abiding citizens until proven otherwise, you'd probably get a lot more cooperation and respect out on the streets. It's people with your attitude that make us so resentful of the police state being set up around us.

I understand your frustration and anger sickandtired. To answer your question I've never had a DUI. I don't have a problem with drugs or alcohol. And you may have a point about getting at least 1 drunk idiot off the street. But to lash out at me is uncalled for. I wish you peace in your life. Take care....<>
