The Lake Elsinore Police Department made numerous drunken driving arrests over the holiday season, a sergeant has reported.
“As a result of the Lake Elsinore Police Departments regular traffic enforcement, stepped up holiday enforcement, in the form of two DUI/CDL checkpoints and six weekend DUI saturation patrols, the Lake Elsinore Police Department arrested 67 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, cited over 85 drivers for driving on suspended or revoked licenses and impounded 83 vehicles,” said the department’s Sgt. Peter Giannakakos.
The stepped up enforcement period ran Nov. 23 through Dec. 31, according to the sergeant.
“The Lake Elsinore Police Department will continue its commitment to public safety throughout 2013 by conducting regular traffic enforcement, DUI/CDL checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols seeking prosecution of all DUI drivers no matter what,” Giannakakos said.
Lake Elsinore contracts its police services through the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
In addition to ramped up efforts in the city, the California Highway Patrol also reported a significant number of arrests in Riverside County through the New Year’s holiday.
From Dec. 28 through Jan. 1, the CHP reported 47 DUI arrests countywide. During that time period there were 27 collisions locally, 13 of them involving injuries, according to CHP Officer Steve Carapia. He said 447 citations were issued for a variety of infractions.
The CHP patrols highways and unincorporated areas.
