The car turned out to be a rental car, and the suspect had an outstanding warrant and was on parole, McCracken said.

After about 45 minutes, law enforcement called off the search.

A CHP officer spotted the suspect around 6 p.m. in the area again, which sparked another chase, said CHP Officer Harvey Ray today.

The suspect slipped away, though law enforcement knows his identity and were working on tracking him down, Ray said.

The suspect was described as a young African American man from Moreno Valley with dreadlocks last seen wearing dark pants, a white T-shirt and carrying a red backpack.

Anybody with information was asked to call the CHP office at 951-506-2004.
