Memorial Day Shooting Leads to Arrest

A man allegedly got in a fight with a family member and shot his car as he drove away, a sheriff's official says.

A Temecula man who allegedly took a shot at a relative at the end of a fistfight was behind bars today.

Melvin DeLeon Brewster, 48, was arrested Monday night on suspicion of attempted murder and shooting at an occupied vehicle after allegedly targeting a family member at his residence in the 31000 block of Oregon Lane. Brewster was being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the in Murrieta.

According to Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Jon Wade, Brewster and a male relative got into a tussle around 10:50 p.m. Monday, and the suspect allegedly ran to another room to retrieve a handgun.

The victim, along with his daughter, abruptly left the house and started to drive away, at which point Brewster allegedly walked outside and "fired one time, striking the front passenger door (of the car)," Wade said.

"Numerous adults and one juvenile were present at the residence at the time of the incident,'' the sergeant said. No one was injured. Brewster was arrested without incident a short time later and the firearm was seized. The reason for the altercation was unclear.
