Police Plan 9/11 Security Ramp-Up

The Temecula Police Department plans to beef up security for the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Security will be ramped up on Sunday for the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The number of deputies -- uniformed and possibly in plain clothes -- will be increased, said sheriff's Lt. Scott Madden today.

The department will also create a "mobile field force" unit, which is a core of deputies who will stay within the city limits at all times in case of an urgent need, the lieutenant said.

The department declined to say exactly how many extra deputies would be on duty for security reasons. "If there were people who were planning to do something, it's not too wise to share too much info," Madden said.

The sheriff's department also stepped up its intelligence gathering system. A core of deputies were  already set up in Riverside to run an "emergency information center." These deputies gather information on terrorist events and spread the information to the surrounding agencies, including the Temecula Police Department.

This is because an event -- a terrorist attack, for example -- could happen in a different city, but could trigger or otherwise affect an event in Temecula, Madden said.

For example, a Camp Pendleton man recently went missing, and authorities allegedly found a bomb threat directed at San Clamente High School among his belongings, Madden said.

The information center radioed Temecula deputies about the event, despite how far away San Clamente is.

"It wasn't even in our county," Madden said, but they sent out the information "just because of the potential for an incident like it."
