Sheriff: Body Found in Charred Cabin; No Dorner ID Yet

Authorities said it is still unclear whether murder suspect Christopher Dorner was inside a cabin that engulfed in flames Tuesday.

Updated 12:06 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigators located charred human remains within the debris of a burned out cabin in Big Bear Tuesday night, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department announced.

Identification of whether the remains are those of fired Los Angeles police officer Christopher Jordan Dorner—suspected in the slayings of four people—will be attempted through forensic means, according to the department.

The 33-year-old Dorner—the subject of a six-day manhunt—allegedly committed a carjacking, then shot and killed a sheriff's deputy in a raging gun battle while barricaded in a cabin on Seven Oaks Road just off Highway 38 that caught fire shortly before 4:30 p.m.

The fire burned for several hours, delaying the entry of law enforcement personnel. Another complication was that investigators believed there was live ammunition in the cabin, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman.

Bachman did not mention Dorner's name in her final briefing of the night, which began around 8:35 p.m.

When asked whether someone was inside the burned cabin, she responded, "We believe that someone was inside and that was the person who stole the vehicle and fled, then abandoned the vehicle, ran into the forest and inside this cabin where he barricaded himself and was engaged in gunfire with our deputy sheriff, shot two of our deputy sheriffs and one of those deputies died."

Bachman earlier said investigators had reason to believe the person holed up in the cabin was Dorner. By about 6:30 p.m., multiple media outlets reported that a body believed to be Dorner had been recovered inside the burned- out cabin, although law enforcement officials had not confirmed the discovery.

"Any reports of a body being found are not true," LAPD Cmdr. Andy Smith said around 8 p.m. "Any reports of that body being identified as Christopher Dorner are not true."

The fiery scene culminated a wild day of violence in the normally tranquil mountain community, which has been the focus of the Dorner manhunt since his pickup truck was found burning in the area last Thursday.

But at 12:20 p.m., San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies received a report of a man matching Dorner's description stealing a car from a cabin in the 1200 block of Club View Drive in Big Bear.

According to various reports from the scene, two female housekeepers had gone into the cabin and found someone matching Dorner's description inside. The suspect tied the women up and fled in their vehicle, according to witnesses and sheriff's officials.

The women were not injured. It was unclear how long the suspect may have been hiding in the cabin, which was ironically located close to the law enforcement command post that had been established during the Dorner manhunt.

The stolen vehicle was spotted a short time later along Highway 38 by a state Fish and Wildlife officer who had been taking part in the hunt, according to the sheriff's department and the state agency. The officer followed the vehicle and the suspect opened fire, striking the pursuing officer's vehicle, according to Fish and Wildlife. The officer was not injured.

Authorities said the suspect got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. A witness told KCAL9 the suspect later emerged from the woods and carjacked a man driving a silver pickup truck. The suspect drove off in the truck, but later crashed it down a forest embankment.

With an army of law enforcement in pursuit, the suspect scampered into the Seven Oaks Road cabin, sparking a gunfight that—according to some reports from the scene—involved the firing of hundreds of rounds.

During the battle, two San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies were shot. Both were airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where one was pronounced dead at 2:24 p.m., according to Bachman.

The other deputy underwent surgery and medical personnel are optimistic about his recovery, but it is believed several additional surgeries will be required, Bachman said.

Meanwhile, the standoff at the cabin continued, but shortly after 4 p.m., tear gas canisters were fired into the building.

By about 4:20 p.m., the cabin was engulfed in flames. Some reports indicated that a single gunshot was heard emanating from the cabin. KCAL9, which had a reporter close to the cabin during the firefight, reported that the sound of exploding ammunition could be heard inside the cabin as the fire raged.

On Feb. 3, Dorner—also a former Navy lieutenant—allegedly gunned down the daughter and future son-in-law of an ex-police captain who represented him at a hearing that resulted in his dismissal from the LAPD. The bodies of 28- year-old Cal State Fullerton assistant women's basketball coach Monica Quan and her fiance, 27-year-old USC public safety officer Keith Lawrence, were found in Lawrence's car in the parking structure of their Irvine condominium building.

The next day, Dorner, 33, allegedly posted a 6,000-word manifesto on Facebook, vowing to kill named LAPD officers and their families. About 50 Los Angeles police officers and their families were being protected during the manhunt, authorities said.

On Thursday, Dorner was allegedly involved in a shootout with Los Angeles police guarding an officer's home in Corona, leaving one officer with a graze wound to the head, police said. About 20 minutes later, he allegedly fired on a pair of Riverside police officers stopped at a red light, killing Officer Michael Crain, 34, and wounding the other. The wounded officer was expected to recover.

Crain, an 11-year department veteran, was a former Marine. He is survived by his wife, Regina, and two children, Ian, 10, and Kaitlyn, 4. Crain left "an unforgettable impression" on everyone he met, Riverside police Lt. Guy Toussaint said. His funeral is set for Wednesday.

The search for Dorner has been focused in the Big Bear area since Thursday afternoon, when his pickup truck—apparently disabled by a broken axle—was found burning in a wooded area.

During an afternoon briefing today in downtown Los Angeles, LAPD Cmdr. Andy Smith said investigators were following up on 1,045 tips received by the department -- most generated after a $1 million reward for information leading to Dorner's capture and conviction was announced Sunday.

If the body were laying face down, or one it's back, the items underneath the body would not be burned as badly as the top of the body- he wasn'r cremated-

You must have seen a different speech than I did- the only standing ovation(which means everybody gets up) was at the beginning and at the end when he was done. You gun control fantasy is not going to happen nationally- but unfortunately it will happen in Cali if any of those 10 bills get passed. Then only Feinstein will have a gun.I notice she was sitting next to your buddy Franken-Who is just as funny now as when he was a comedian

isla.. "charred" isn't the same thing as "destroyed"..
a well-done steak on the barbeque is probably "charred".. it's possible.. even likely..that a lot of stuff in that cabin is intact..maybe not even singed.. doug

HOW CAN THEY FIND A BODY YET...the funeral isn't over yet...funny how a Cop that Dorner was FRIENDS with is now dead...his PHYSICAL APPEARANCE, except for color, is EXACTLY like Dorner...TATTOO and ALL...Rest in PEACE Michael Caine~ looks like he was expendable and knew too much...probably FROM Dorner...ALL dirty cops will SEE THE LIGHT SOON!!! So I guess you are perfect and have no psychological flaws. The deputy in the Spellys incident was way out of line, but that is no reason to condemn all deputies. And you obviously have never worn a badge and had to deal with "civilians" who don't know there place. Look at the brawl at the winery over the weekend- resisting and obstruction are pretty serious not to mention assaulting a deputy, just because you didn't want your freind to get arrested. So they got arrested too-Those are the kind of situations that a police officer needs to "throw his weight around". Because that is all these peole understand.

First- it was the daughter of a former police Captain who was killed-yes killed by your hero. Do you know what a felony stop is? Experience first hand probably. The unit was advise that Dorner was heading their way, so they were anxious, as any normal person should be. Did they not follow procedure- yes- you light up the approaching with your lights to ID the occupants. There will be action taken-I bet you are one of the people LAPD is looking for because you helped Dorner That makes you an accessory to murder.
KC February 13, 2013 at 08:16 pm
The question our police departments need to be asking is "What have we learned from this?" All agencies need to communicate! What Standard Operating Procedures are in place to ensure swift notification across all agencies? The CHP could have caught Dorner before he even made it to Big Bear if they were notified right away of the shooting on Allesandro. That information will most likely be swept under the table. Everyone needs to improve their departments communication time frames and get past these ineffective silos. Increase communication & learn how to work together!

I hope dormers still alive. He isn't a psychopath, he's a human being. He stated this was his last resort, he did all the legal things he could to get his name cleared and Uncle Sam covered up the truth and fired a good guy. He's doing a justice to the people of California, you all should be thankful for his heroism. Anyone who believes he is a monster didn't do much research and just believed everything the media told you. The media also told you that his death was confirmed a suicide. Oh wait, they also said never mind, because they were telling you lies. No confirmation has been made. Also, would good cops shoot at multiple innocent people? No. Dorner in no way killed anyone he considered innocent. He killed only the people who killing would instill fear into the minds of the corrupt LAPD. Anyone who blurts out incorrect "facts" about Dorner makes me sick. He's no more or less guilty than quite a few of the officers in the LAPD. Good luck Dorner, get those corrupt bastards to change their corrupt ways. It is sad that this is what it had to come to, but not much will change the minds of those money-hungry corrupt cops. You will be remembered as a hero, someone who died a martyr
Shane February 13, 2013 at 09:14 pm
Jayjay and KC.....Explain the lack of communication? Jayjay....do you really think any cop killer would be taken alive, especially after killing the third police officer and engaging in a firefight, with his store bought automatic weapon????
Dormer is just another reason why automatic weapons need to be banned for the public. You never know when any person is going to fall off the edge.....look at Vince??

JJ !!! Are you my youngest daughters father? She came up with the same dang scenerio last night. I told her, LOL, and "that is a crazy idea".!!
The Teller of Truth February 13, 2013 at 10:58 pm
I don't know about that. I doubt that he set the cabin that he was hiding in, on fire himself. I heard that the police force there, were ordered to "burn it down". Guess we will see.

jayjay..
i will assume you haven't seen the interviews with the two people he tied up and whose car he stole..YESTERDAY..kinda shoots your theory in the ass, doesn't it? i swear, some people oughta have to pass an I.Q. test to post here.. doug
Doug Curlee February 14, 2013 at 02:05 am
"burners"is the term most law enforcement uses to describe their pyrotechnic tear gas cylinders..they burn hot and fast..
seen 'em in action many times.. they WILL start fires very easily.. doug
Steve Newman February 14, 2013 at 01:43 pm
Shane- once again not paying attention to the facts- it was a semi automatic weapon, not an automatic weapon- big difference. Even a Chicago thug would know that. And automatic weapons are banned-pay attention
Steve Newman February 14, 2013 at 01:49 pm
You probably though OJ was innocent too. You are a real piece of work(there are other words but the censors are up). Did you help Dorner in his escape. Did you provide shelter for him? That makes you an accessory and you will be found out and dealt with. You are the only one blurting out incorrect facts- so you make yourself sick- and you make the rest of us sick. May you soon be reunited with your hero.

Vic February 14, 2013 at 04:49 pm
Thanks, Steve.
steven jackson February 14, 2013 at 05:03 pm
Why black men always have to be labeled monster when , they take a bold stand against law enforcement , when these same devils kill black men every dam day?
You call them hero's.seriously?
Brenda February 14, 2013 at 05:33 pm

Vince is falling off the edge>? Dang one of our own!
Shane, its true the guy was not going to just walk out and give up and actually he didnt even give the police the opportunity to DO THAT! He just started firing or he just might be alive today. No one will take away my weapons, nope, nope, nope.
Brenda February 14, 2013 at 09:56 pm
Anyone who kills innocent people, children are monsters Steven. Doesnt matter what color they are.
But, if you put a number to who kills the most any given day in the USA its probably "White man". All of the large mass killers, guns blazing nuts, have definately been "White Man". Someone who knows how and likes to look up statistics on the internet perhaps will do that here.
Brenda February 14, 2013 at 10:04 pm
Steven,
I think the only ones considered heros at this moment is the man who was in the truck with his dog, and the couple that were cleaning up their cabin and Dorner was in it. Also the people that Dorner shot along the way is better to call them heros then nothing, just innocent people and police officers. Dorner was a monster. If he had driven up, the chicken chit he was, and just shot the head off your brother wouldnt you call him a coward, a monster, no matter what color he was? Your brother not even getting a fair chance to fight back? That is cold blooded murder Steven and it doesnt matter what color you are, he was.
steven jackson February 15, 2013 at 03:44 pm
You know I agree with you on what you saying, but being a black man in this world is know walk in the park,we, 're shot down everyday like dogs, and there not not stink about it , was Jeffrey dommer a monster, Ted Bundy, those are monster, this guy was one upset black man that choose that path to end his life.and what really kills me , you capture your , serials killers , then give them life sentences to qoat on qoat , Studies them for the next 20 years.
steven jackson February 15, 2013 at 03:51 pm
And for the record, white people could never be a hero to a black person.cause you will never treat us equal, so how would you ever to expect to ?
Steve Newman February 15, 2013 at 05:17 pm
wow- you are a real bigot aren't you. You blame white men for all your shortcomings when in reality the white man has provdied all you have now- slavery abolished by a white man- equal opportunity by a white man and more. the white man has been trying to make up to you for the wrongs your people were subjected to over 150 years ago. Are there some whites that hate blacks? yes there are. Aer there blacks that hate whites? yeas there are. But don't lump all white people into one category and hate us all. You have just as much chance to succeed as the whites but you have to work at it-not expect hand outs.
James Jones February 15, 2013 at 08:06 pm
Simply, the man shot and killed two innocent people in order to get back at the father of the female victim. Not to mention the others that were no part of his "manifesto". Black or white, that's a monster.
Brenda February 16, 2013 at 03:48 pm
AND STAY out of jail. With some 80% of black men either in jail, or have been in jail at one time or another you seal your own fate and make your own future.
If you take that 80% and think a good portion will be repeat offenders because there is not real good job opportunities out there for convicts, they will keep stealing, drugging to raise money. Blacks have the same chance, if not more, to succeed as anyone, even more with all of the black educations funds, grants etc. So don't come belly aching to me if you dont use your brain and the options available to you. Also the same goes for white people, or any color people who prefer to do illegal stuff instead of going to school, get the education for a job and live a nice life. There are alot of people that waste their lives and its not just blacks.

All comes down to getting the "GOLD" Balanced right in the big City Hall right? We areRead More broke we are broke! We have how many more million dollar residents, ranches, farms who pay taxes, how many more business's, triple, quadruple, on and on that pay taxes, and some very large business's at that for YEARS. Yet Murietta and Menifee with just the few they have can manage to not only put in side walks, AND ALSO ACTULLY Listen their residents, instead of call them names like Paul has been, concerns and respond to them. Hell we are just now getting some attention to our driving issues with running red lights, speeding, not stopping at stop signs, driving drunk, high, or wreeklessly causing deaths and serious injuries to walkers, bike riders, skate board, scooter riders, wheelchairs, motor bike riders, and other cars. But how many lives were lost or severly disabled until we just now the last 2 weeks have been giving traffic details for different areas, cell phone details, etc. Lucky to get some sidewalks finished in 10 years if someone doesnt figure out where our "Gold" is we all pay in. And stop calling names people at the City meetings to Paul or anyone else trying to get our City to do what its there for. By the time someone in your own family is killed they will be laughing at you for standing up asking for sidewalks right? Just like on the "Patch" comment areas, always calling names instead of sticking with your fellow Temeculites and getting us something DONE! Before we loose more lives
