Salon Massacre Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

Scott Evans Dekraai is accused of killing eight people, including a former Temecula salon owner, Randy Fannin, 62, during a shooting rampage in Seal Beach.

A man accused of killing a former Temecula hair salon owner in a pleaded not guilty today.

Scott Evans Dekraai was arraigned this morning in Orange County Superior Court on eight counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Dekraai was accused of walking into Salon Meritage on Oct. 12 and opening fire.

Among the dead was Randy Lee Fannin, 62, a Murrieta resident who ran a salon in Temecula before opening Salon Meritage in Seal Beach. To read more about him,

The alleged killer's primary target was his ex-wife, Michelle Fournier, 48, but he killed Fannin because he lunged at the gunman with scissors, Dekraai told investigators. To read about what the suspect said,

Fannin first tried to calm the angry ex-husband and encouraged him to find another way to solve his problems, according to a witness. To read about what the witness saw,

The other victims included Victoria Ann Buzzo, 54, Lucia Bernice Kondas, 65, Laura Lee Elody, 46, Christy Lynn Wilson, 47, Michele Daschbach Fast, 47, and David Caouette, 64. Hattie Stretz, 73, was also shot but survived.

Fannin was laid to rest in Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana. Friends shared memories of Fannin and of their good times in his salon.

"As soon as you went into the Salon, you could feel the love and great energy there. I feel blessed to have known him," one mourner said. To read more about what people said about the man,

Dekraai, a former tugboat operator, was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after a 2007 accident left him unable to work. The 42-year-old also told the family court-appointed psychologist that he was diagnosed as bipolar, John Cate, Fournier's attorney, told the Associated Press.

Dekraai is being held without bail.
