The program is scheduled to run throughout the year on various roadways within the city of Temecula.

The following is a news release from the Temecula Police Department:

Over the past several months the city of Temecula has experienced several serious traffic collisions along the Winchester Road corridor. In response to these traffic collisions and requests from the citizens of the community regarding speeding and other traffic violations, officers from the city of Temecula Police Department, Traffic Division conducted a high-visibility traffic enforcement detail on Rancho California Road.

During this operation, 72 citations were issued for violations ranging from speeding to red light violations. Two vehicles were towed due to the drivers being unlicensed.

The goal of this operation was to make motorists more aware of the rules of the road and to promote safe driving.

This program is scheduled to run throughout the year on various roadways within the city of Temecula. For additional information the Temecula Police Department Traffic Division may be reached at (951) 696-3000.

Install red light cameras at key intersections to catch scofflaws. This program will enforce traffic laws while promoting traffic safety. Carrying out this program will require official leadership to face and counter the rabid, irrational, intense opposition from scofflaws. But traffic safety must prevail.

I hope they are able to do roving patrols with motorcycle cops. Those guys seem to be able to pick the drunks out of a crowd very effectively.

Anotherview: Red light cameras are a scam and a proven one at that.
Monday – Friday I watch (or hear) traffic officers cherry picking motorist all day, which is their job. Tickets are so easy to avoid by not breaking traffic laws, so enforce on!

The biggest issue resulting in crashes is those running red lights. On any given day I count tow or three at one time running the red left turn light at any light on Temecula Parkway . We (in the car) make bets on how many will run the light in front of us.

There is something I don't get about this article. If the area in question was the Winchester Rd corridor then why was the enforcement beefed up on Rancho California Rd? Isn't that just like saying there has been an increase in robberies of ice cream shops so deputies are now going to steak out sandwich shops? Did they ignore the Winchester Rd corridor? This is very strange!

Red light cameras are one of the DUMBEST ideas ever!!!
Steve Newman March 14, 2013 at 05:32 pm
red light cameras don't keep you from speeding-only increase rear end collisions, which they already are trying to combat.
Steve Newman March 14, 2013 at 05:34 pm
They did say various roadways, but I see your point.

I thought I was the only one doing that (making bets on light runners). We moved from Temecula to Sun City a while back and it's the same at the Newport/Haun intersection. It never ceases to amaze me how many people just keep going after the light has turned.

Hmmmm, surprised they're not doin it on St. Patty's Day!! I dont think they could handle it. Thanks for the tip. Is this actually legal though? Indiscriminate stopping and questioning citizens in their vehicles? Don't they need a legal reason/suspicion in order to stop a vehicle and question the driver?
Gandhi March 15, 2013 at 04:36 am
I agree anotherview totally. I rarely see officers out during the busiest times of the day ANYWHERE!! I go through at least 4 of our major intersections here, no cops, this is between 5-6pm, many red light runner, illegal maneuvers, bad drivers. I'm fed up myself and demand to start seeing officers out there since we do not have red light cameras functioning at this point.
Gandhi March 15, 2013 at 04:37 am
There are MANY more problems out there besides drunks TVOR. Most of the maniacs I see out there appear to be on speed if you ask me! They are probably not high on anything actually, just very aggressive drivers.
Gandhi March 15, 2013 at 04:39 am
I dont live far from there, and I get to hear the sirens day and night! I still say we either need cops posted there or a camera, one or the other!
Gandhi March 15, 2013 at 04:40 am
I think the cops should ALWAYS be out there, not just for a "limited time"!! Thats what we pay them for I believe.

The anti-red light camera fanatics (AKA scofflaws) have emerged from their holes. Readers may note these fanatics argue by assertion and accusation, not by facts, information, and analysis. Meanwhile, an observer may see scofflaws continually ignoring the red light by running it at busy local intersections. Let us hope our city leadership mans up to these scofflaws, in the interest of traffic safety for all. Install red light cameras citywide at busy intersections to ID and ticket these scofflaws who run red lights. These scofflaws endanger all who use the public roadways. The concern for traffic safety must trump the intense opposition of scofflaws to enforcement of traffic laws via red light cameras. Wikipedia offers a fair evaluation of red light camera use worldwide. This evaluation, however, omits an explanation of the slight increase in rear-end collisions at some intersections with red light cameras. One may suppose, however, that other scofflaws, used to speeding up behind fellow scofflaws now trying to obey the law, have to slam on the brakes but too late to avoid a rear-end collision. Yet, overall, traffic collisions drop at intersections with red light cameras.

Can you find another word other than scofflaws? A bit overworked in your posting.
Gandhi March 15, 2013 at 10:09 pm
@ anotherview - dont bother with Steve Newman - this is his entire life - arguing on Patch, if he can't argue with somebody about ANYTHING, its not a good day for him! And you are correct in your observations, they do not have links to any facts to back up what they say here, they just spew it out as if that meant it was a fact. I would think EVENTUALLY people would slow down and obey the laws after the cameras had been there for awhile wouldnt you? Makes sense. Now, if we can just convince the city council.......they already have the cameras there, they just need to turn them on.

Duh! Don't drink & drive and you don't have to worry about DUI checkpoints. Don't text/talk while driving & you don't have to worry about special Distracted Driver crackdowns. Don't speed or run red lights & you don't get tickets. Oh...too much common sense, SA. You're making my brain hurt :)

All comes down to getting the "GOLD" Balanced right in the big City Hall right? We areRead More broke we are broke! We have how many more million dollar residents, ranches, farms who pay taxes, how many more business's, triple, quadruple, on and on that pay taxes, and some very large business's at that for YEARS. Yet Murietta and Menifee with just the few they have can manage to not only put in side walks, AND ALSO ACTULLY Listen their residents, instead of call them names like Paul has been, concerns and respond to them. Hell we are just now getting some attention to our driving issues with running red lights, speeding, not stopping at stop signs, driving drunk, high, or wreeklessly causing deaths and serious injuries to walkers, bike riders, skate board, scooter riders, wheelchairs, motor bike riders, and other cars. But how many lives were lost or severly disabled until we just now the last 2 weeks have been giving traffic details for different areas, cell phone details, etc. Lucky to get some sidewalks finished in 10 years if someone doesnt figure out where our "Gold" is we all pay in. And stop calling names people at the City meetings to Paul or anyone else trying to get our City to do what its there for. By the time someone in your own family is killed they will be laughing at you for standing up asking for sidewalks right? Just like on the "Patch" comment areas, always calling names instead of sticking with your fellow Temeculites and getting us something DONE! Before we loose more lives
