A fire Saturday on Camp Pendleton sent plumes of smoke over the Temecula Valley, accompanied by a strong odor of burning.
The fire -- between Las Pulgas and Basilone roads -- was reported about 3:40 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
About 4:15 p.m., the smell of things burning hung over the air in Temecula and the sky was yellow with clouds of smoke.
It was unclear how much acreage was burned on the base.
