Two Hydrants Destroyed in Two Crashes

The unrelated incidents happened within an hour of each other and sent fountains of water shooting from the ground.

Today was not a lucky day for Temecula's fire hydrants.

Two were knocked from their bases in two separate crashes that happened about an hour apart, sending fountains of water shooting dozens of feet in the air.

The first crash happened at 12:05 p.m. on Glen Oaks Road about half a mile south of Rancho California Road, according to Melody Hendrickson, spokesperson for the Riverside County Fire Department.

Two vehicles collided, and one of them -- a small pickup truck -- went over the hydrant, knocking it from the road.

The second crash happened about 1:10 p.m., near the site of the first crash, on Rancho California Road, north of Loma Ventosa Lane, in front of , according to Hendrickson.

A Chevrolet pickup truck swerved, and then rolled across lanes about three times, hitting the fire hydrant in the process.

The truck landed on its wheels, and the female driver got out and sat down on the curb with blood dripping from her hair. A California Highway Patrol questioned her as she sat there.
