UPDATE: Mom Hurt, Son Nearly Hit by Truck

The woman was crossing an intersection with her son when a truck hit her.

A woman who was struck by a truck while riding her bike today was with her son.

The woman -- a Temecula resident whose identity was unavailable -- was riding a bicycle south across the entrance to the parking lot from Margarita Road around 12 p.m. when a man driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck hit her, knocking her off her bike, said sheriff's Deputy J. Grip.

Her son, who appeared to be about 10 years old, was only a few feet behind her, a witness said. Neither riders were wearing helmets.

"It looked like it was just an accidentโ€ฆ a misjudgment," said Atishna Goodman.
She saw the crash when she was pulling into the parking lot. She pulled over and -- along with several other witnesses -- and ran to help.

The little boy froze in shock for a moment when he saw his mother get hit, then plopped onto the curb and started to cry, Goodman said as she sat next to the boy, rubbing his back.

"I wouldn't want him sitting on the curb by himself," she said.

The mother was conscious and complained of a hurt leg, but showed no other obvious signs of injury, Deputy Grip said.

The two bikes lay in front of the truck as investigators interviewed the boy and the truck driver and inspected the bikes. Groceries hung from one of the handlebars.

One northbound lane was blocked, and a deputy put the two bikes in his patrol car and gave the young boy a ride home.
