Victim: Defendant Used Me for His 'Sick, Perverted Pleasure'

The victims of Dr. David Martinus Reiakvam, 44, a former Temecula dentist, testified during his sentencing hearing Friday in Riverside.

A former Temecula dentist who sexually assaulted two girls he was coaching in acrobatics was sentenced today to two years in prison—a term his victims said was not long enough to ensure he wouldn't be able to prey on other children.

Dr. David Martinus Reiakvam, 44, pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of lewd acts on a child just as jury selection began for his trial. He could have faced more than 50 years behind bars had he been convicted of the 15 felonies with which he was originally charged.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Ronald Taylor repeatedly reminded courtroom observers today that the sentence was the result of a "negotiated plea" and he would not override it.

In exchange for Reiakvam's accepting responsibility for the two felonies, the District Attorney's Office dropped 11 counts of committing lewd acts on a child under 15 years old, as well as two counts of oral copulation of a child under 18 against him.

"You took impressionable children's dreams and used them instead for your sick, perverted pleasure," said Amy Angome, who was sexually molested by the defendant beginning when she was 13 year old.

"It's not the predator in the bushes you need to worry about. It's those in positions of power and authority, like David, who harm precious and vulnerable children."

The second victim, Shenea Booth, read a statement to the court recalling how Reiakvam repeatedly molested her, allegedly raping her at 13 as his then-wife Sherry and toddler son slept in adjacent rooms.

"Do you remember my blood on your T-shirt?" Booth asked, looking directly at Reiakvam, who stared straight ahead.

"Do you remember abusing me in the shower, or in your dental office? Do you remember what you did to me in front of your son while he was strapped into a car seat?"

Angome and Booth told City News Service they were among dozens of children, primarily girls, coached in acrobatics at Reiakvam's Empire Acro Gym on Market Street in Riverside. It has since closed.

The women—Angome is now 27 and Booth 26—were invited to live with the Reiakvams to maintain an uninterrupted schedule of training and academics, they told City News Service. Booth, who went on to win two world championship titles in acrobatics, left after one year. Angome stayed until she was 19.

"I guess you could say it was like Stockholm syndrome," Angome said, referring to the psychological phenomenon in which hostages bond with their captors.

"David was very good at manipulation. The mental thing was more damaging than the physical abuse in a lot of ways."

Both victims said Reiakvam excelled at portraying himself as a family man and trustworthy member of the community, while all along looking for a new target. According to Angome, Reiakvam came under investigation after he allegedly tried to contact a 13-year-old girl on his son's Facebook page.

The women believe many more victims have not come forward.

"I hope they do," Angome said. "That means more charges can be filed, and he can get a long prison sentence."

Booth said Reiakvam's two-year prison term was not "anywhere long enough."

"David should not be in society," Booth said. "Someone of his violent caliber should be locked away. He's a danger to himself and others."

According to District Attorney's Office Public Information Officer John Hall, defense attorney Tera Harden broached the plea deal this week after the case had been assigned to Taylor's courtroom for trial, leading to negotiations and mutually acceptable terms.

"Several things were considered in the decision to accept the plea agreement," Hall said. "By agreeing to this, the victims would not have to testify during a trial and, with the felony conviction and lifetime registration as a sex offender, Mr. Reiakvam will likely no longer be able to practice dentistry."

Reiakvam, who began his dental practice in 1998, failed to renew his license earlier this year. The Dental Board of California had placed restrictions on his practice in January 2011, prohibiting him from accepting patients under 18 years old pending resolution of the criminal charges.

In the last article it was said that these two victims ok'd his plea sentence, when asked by the Prosecutor err Judge, of 2 years, lessening of 11 charges, instead of all charges and 50 yrs if it went to trial. Then in this article they say this? Which is my feelings exactly. There must be more to this story then is being said because if I was a victim and said this part, I would certainly NEVER give my ok for him to recieve a 2 yr plea deal. Something is just wack about this story if they want him to get more time it was in their hands. The women believe many more victims have not come forward. "I hope they do," Angome said. "That means more charges can be filed, and he can get a long prison sentence." Booth said Reiakvam's two-year prison term was not "anywhere long enough." "David should not be in society," Booth said. "Someone of his violent caliber should be locked away. He's a danger to himself and others."

Can't wrap my mind around "negotiated plea" not being overriden by said judge....or any judge for that matter. Judge Taylor must not have a daughter, or maybe any other women of value in his life. Reiakvam's victims didn't have the OPTION of "negotiated plea" <13 years ago. And how does defense attorney Tera Harden sleep at night? I'm guessing she does so with a lot of prescription help. Will be interested to see the CA Dental Board's decision too. These girls found their voices to speak up for their loss of childhood - I hope his other victims come forward and find their voices as well.

The Dental Board has to go through a lot to try to take his license Away..unfortunately..but they can still keep it to where he cannot have any patients under 18..that along with him being a predator will probably hurt him in the dental field...I am in the field and know that patients would not be comfortable with him at all....

Sick bastard, should have gotten "life" if you ask me, and I know it would be short in prison once they found out what he'd done. Please remember this judge at the next election and vote him OUT!!

The last article was wrong. They did not okay his plea. Let this situation be a warning to all parents out there. My parents trusted this coach with my life...on gymnastics trips around the world. I was fortunate to not be victimized. This is a man we would have NEVER suspected EVER. Do not allow your children to have alone time with trusted teachers, coaches, even Sunday school teachers. It is not worth it. I am so proud of the two victims for their boldness and so sorry for the pain David caused them. I hope the rest of the victims can find their voices and be brave too so that David can receive the punishment he deserves.

WOW! Only two years - what a complete miscarriage of justice. With good conduct and time served, this perv will be out trolling our streets in no time. I feel for the victims and their families. I will say though that I hope I get his attorney if I ever need a lawyer. The perv is looking at 50 years and only gets two? His lawyer must have nudie pics of the judge's wife.

Why is everyone bad-mouthing the judge and the defense attorney? it's the DA's office that plea bargained this case away! Plea bargains are made between the defense and the prosecution. What was DA Zellerbach thinking? He must be scared of ruining his precious trial stats. He doesn't care a thing about these victims! Shame on you, DA Zellerbach!!

It's amazing how many people are willing to cause permanent damage to someone in order to satisfy their own sexual needs. It is very sad to me.

I have no idea why parents would allow a male gymnastic coach, coach their kids. Toooooo hands on. When a male is eager to be a Cub Scout Leader (or alike), gymnastics coach, water polo coach etc. there may be something wrong in Demark. Reiakuam is a true “soul assassin”.

I dont understand why, if the pervert "accepted responsibility" for TWO felonies, he's only getting two years behind bars?!! Two felonies?!! Only one year per felony? Something is very wrong here, besides what he did, something is wrong with our legal system when a sick person like this can do what he did and "plea bargain" away 13 other crimes!! Yes, the DA is guilty, and so is the judge here, he stated he "refused to override it" - which means that he COULD have!! Demand justice for these two young women!! Do NOT re-elect this judge and demand that the DA be removed from office! This has been a gross miscarriage of justice. This guy was a doctor, also very trusted by parents, not just some bum on the streets. This guy should have been locked up for MINIMUM ten years. Somebody got paid off thats all I know, there is no other logical explanation for this.

Annie - the Judge COULD HAVE OVERTURNED THIS PLEA BARGAIN, AND HE REFUSED. That is why we are blaming both of them.

Hate to tell all of you, but A Teacher in your community came across the US, picked up my x-husband and brought him to Temecula, knowing he molested my daughter, so you have teachers bringing them to your own community, first thing he did was go get a prescription for Medical Pot, and called home and bragged to everyone about it. I just pray no other High School girl has to go thru the pain of what happened to her, because this women rescued him to Temecula, and taking him right in with his prey, when the teacher is at school, he is home checking out porn behind closed doors...he could be your next door neighbor or the coach of one of your daughters.

Concerned american - excuse me I'm not sure I'm getting what you're saying here. YOU were married to a pedophile? Who is this person, what is his name? Why warn and scare everybody about him and then not tell us who he is? I really dont see the point of your comments here. If you want to help others, expose him.

your question above is What is going wrong...I was giving you a perfect example of what is going wrong..you ask. Copies of this have been sent to the Child Services Division and hopefully they keep a watch on this individual for the sake of teenage girls in this area. I am not allowed to mention "names" so that is why a name was not mentioned, but I am telling you the truth...sad but true!!!
Gandhi December 07, 2012 at 11:35 PM
Huh?? My question above is what is going wrong........?? I hope somebody can understand what you're saying, cause I sure cant!! Copies of WHAT have been sent to child services? I'm afraid its not THEIR JOB to keep "an eye on individuals" ca. Why would you NOT be allowed to mention names? What good are your comments here without a name??? Useless information there.
