UPDATED: Woman Dead in Temecula Home; Man in Critical Condition

Just before 6 a.m. Thursday, Temecula police found a woman dead and a man suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at a home in the 30000 block of Del Rey Road.

UPDATED at 11:55 a.m.: Neighbors in the quiet community of Meadowview say all was quiet leading up to the tragedy discovered Thursday morning on Del Rey Road.

"Neighbors are friendly, but everyone pretty much keeps to themselves. We've never heard anything," said Linda Wiggins, who lives a few doors from the scene in which a woman was discovered dead and a man was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Crime tape cordoned off the Temecula neighborhood in the 30200 block of Del Rey as authorities investigated. The upscale neighborhood features horses, well-kept yards, and ranch fencing, where neighbors say they are busy with their lives and respect each others' privacy.

"It's quiet here. Everyone pretty much keeps to themselves," said Ron Wiggins, who lives next door to the white house in which the pair was found inside. Wiggins said he never heard any arguing between the couple.

Thursday's investigation began when Temecula Police responded just before 6 a.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at the home, according to Riverside County sheriff's Cpl. Angel Ramos.

"Dispatch received secondhand information that a male shot a female, inside the location, with a firearm," Ramos wrote in an emailed response to Patch. "Officers arrived on scene and surrounded the home."

Numerous attempts to call out the person or persons inside the home were unsuccessful, so officers made entry into the home, according to the corporal.

Once inside, they found a deceased woman.

A male suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound was also found, and he was transported to a hospital in critical condition, Ramos wrote.

The couple were likely in their 50s and had lived at the residence for about 15 years, according to Wiggins.

"That's my best guess," he said, admitting he barely knew the pair. "It's funny, you don't always know your neighbors."

Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Central Homicide Unit assumed the investigation underway near the intersection of Del Rey Road and Avenida Barca, and detectives have streamed in and out of the home that features mature trees and a basketball hoop in the driveway.

Wiggins believed the couple had children—older boys, he thought.

Police say they will release more information Thursday.

"The investigation is in its infancy stages and no further information is available at this time," Ramos wrote.
