Temecula Farm Hosts Officials for Debut of County 'Ag Trail'

All the attractions are accessible by car and cover a roughly 400-mile route that zigzags across the county, from its southwestern pocket to the Arizona state line.

A map featuring more than 100 farms, vegetable stands, wineries and other places throughout Riverside County where homegrown products can be bought was unveiled by Supervisor Jeff Stone during a ceremony Friday at Peltzer Farms in Temecula.

The "Ag Trail" can be found at Agtrail.rivcoca.org and highlights stops in the Temecula Valley Wine Country, Riverside citrus groves, Cherry Valley and the desert.

The county is home to around 1,700 dairies, farms, ranches, wineries, historical and cultural sites.

Several agencies, including the Departments of Environmental Health and Information Technology, partnered with the Riverside County Farm Bureau and California Women for Agriculture to design the website and other promotional materials.

"The county's goal is to promote agriculture and agri-tourism," county Foreign Trade Commissioner Tom Freeman told City News Service.

"This helps market these 100-plus locations and will definitely help in driving attendance to festivals and fairs and will likely help sell our ag products, from fresh-cut Christmas trees to pumpkins to the whole variety of produce grown across the county."

The online chart allows users to choose from several different categories, depending on their interests. A visitor will get a snapshot of farmers' markets, where to look for wineries and details and schedules on the county's popular festivals and fairs, including the National Date Festival in Indio and the Beaumont Cherry Festival.

There is also information on holiday farms which do business seasonally, such as Temecula's Peltzer Farms.

All the attractions are accessible by car and cover a roughly 400-mile route that zigzags across the county, from its southwestern pocket to the Arizona state line.

"It is such a vast area," said Carrie Peltzer of Peltzer Farms. "I think it will get people out here."

The Ag Trail map debut was also celebrated earlier Friday during a reception hosted by Stone and Supervisors John Benoit at Madison Street Produce in Indio.

Benoit and Stone introduced the Ag Trail concept last July as a means to promote tourism and support area agricultural interests.

According to Freeman, the county's agricultural trade is valued at $3 billion, with exports to 67 countries. He said Japan and China were the top export destinations of agricultural products generated locally in 2011.

The county's agricultural base supports more than 30,000 jobs, according to Freeman.

Stone touted the potential of the Temecula Valley Wine Country to boost the regional economy as it undergoes an expansion encompassing 22,000 acres, populated by growers, vintners and related businesses.

Of the county's wine grapes, all are grown in the Temecula Valley. In 2011, the area's commodity of wine grapes was valued at $6.7 million.

It is so sad that our state has allowed this to happen. I remember a few years ago when the TVUSDRead More budget was horrible and teacher's were given less than $100.00 to budget their classrooms. Teachers are allowed to ask for donations but can no longer "require" students to bring in supplies for the classroom. PARENT'S need to step up to the plate!! After all these are OUR children and it's our responsibility to help them get the best education they can get. As long as people have the "entitlement" attitude with the public school system I can only see thing getting worse and not better. Please parents, help your teacher's. It does not take a fortune to pick up something extra for the classroom while buying your own child school supplies. Just my opinion!!

A skating rink with ice is more desirable. Temecula and Murrieta have lots of kids involved in iceRead More skating and hockey, but have to drive to Escondido or Riverside to participate.

I second that thought. A roller rink would be great for the kids and "big kids", alike! IRead More recall the fun times going to the roller rink, bowling alley, parks and movies throughout Spring and Summer breaks. There was always the crystal ball spinning on the ceiling during skate contests while the DJ played, "Too Hot", from Cool and the Gang! LOL!!!

Nicholas: One thing ... not a nice thing ... which has not been commented upon very much is theRead More fact that this attack carried a "double sting." Not only was it directed against Americans (and their visitors for the Marathon) on "Patriot's Day" in Boston, but sundown on that terrible day marked the 65th Anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel ... at the very instant of which, in 1947, all of the surrounding Arab States simultaneously attacked. This was, if you will, "a double blow" ... and undoubtedly a "double 'Islalmic Terrorist' "Statement." Joseph B. Hudson, Jr., Esq., Fallbrook - (Member, American Society of International Law).

I never felt being Canadian that I would ever come close to losing my sisters to a terrorist attack.Read More Both of them flew to Boston from desperate parts of Canada. Mi youngest sister trained for 5 years qualifying to get in only to injure herself last year . So this was a big event this year for us . When I first heard there where bombs at the finish lines I spent 3 hours wrenched with fear , anger not being able to find out where my sisters where and if they are ok. About 4:00 pacific I heard from my mother that my lil sister crossed the finish line and was 4 blocks away looking for my other sister who was there to cheer her on . Thank God my sister was a fast runner at 3:24 she was out of the area but my other sister was not and saw the carnage just disgusting !... I am bringing here to Temecula for some Rest and happier vacation
