Camp Pendleton Neutral on Quarry

A military official tells county officials the marine base has no stance on the controversial quarry.

Camp Pendleton is neither for nor against the Liberty Quarry project, an official told county supervisors Tuesday.

The quarry, which is planned to go north of Camp Pendleton just south of Temecula, is scheduled to be voted on at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow at the County Administrative Center in Riverside during a Board of Supervisors meeting.

"We're not against it, we're not for it. We're neutral," said Paul Boughman, the base's special council for water law.

Supervisor Bob Buster seemed puzzled by the camp's neutrality. "Wouldn't you want to get a closer source of aggregate to lower your costs and the taxpayers' costs?" he asked Boughman.

The military official said it wasn't the camp's place to take a stand on a civilian issue such as the quarry.

"This is a local issue, it's not in our purview," he said.

Granite Construction, the company planning the quarry, made its case to the board for several hours Tuesday. To read about it, click here.
