Temecula Appoints Assistant City Manager From Within

Greg Butler, who has served as director of public works and city engineer for four years, will assume the role of assistant city manager on Monday.

A familiar face around the Temecula Civic Center has been appointed assistant city manager, it was announced Thursday.

Greg Butler, who currently serves as director of public works and city engineer, will assume the role of assistant city manager on Monday, according to a news release.

Thursday’s announcement concludes a national recruitment process that garnered more than 275 applications, stated Isaac Garibay, senior human resources analyst for the City of Temecula.

Butler brings 21 years of public service experience to the position, including 14 years serving the City of Temecula, the past four of which he has served in his current position.

As assistant city manager, Butler will provide support to City Manager Aaron Adams along with members of City Council, as well as general oversight of the Public Works, Community Development, Human Resources, and Information Technology Departments; and the Risk and Emergency Management functions.

Butler holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from San Diego State University, and is a licensed professional civil engineer.

“Additionally, he has had involvement with many citywide endeavors including managing major capital projects, serving on the Labor Negotiations Team, navigating budgetary constraints during challenging economic times, and City revitalization and development. Butler has served as an asset to the citizens, the business community, and the organization, and will continue to do so in his new role,” the news released stated.

“I’m thrilled to be provided the opportunity to serve the city in this expanded role, and look forward to working closely with Aaron and the City Council to address the needs of this dynamic community,” Butler stated.

The assistant city manager position offers health, dental, vision and life insurance benefits afforded to all other city employees, and an annual salary range of $137,881 to $194,153.

Butler’s annual salary will be $184,797, according to Garibay.

In the coming weeks, the city plans to begin a recruitment process for a successor public works director/city engineer.
