How Long is an ER Wait at Your Local Hospitals? Feds Spill the Beans

Medicare database shows how hospitals across Riverside County—and nation—compare for care.

If you go to the emergency room at than Southwest Healthcare System with a broken bone, how long will it take before you get pain medicine?

The federal government says the wait at Southwest—which runs Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar and Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta—is 62 minutes on average.

That's the national average but less than the state average at 69 minutes.

It's also less than Loma Linda University Medical Center in Murrieta, which is 84 minutes on average.

Key measures of ER efficiency have been posted from hospitals taking part across the country, according to a report by HealthLeaders Media senior quality editor Cheryl Clark.

“With precious little fanfare, Uncle Sam last month rolled out a big, fat database with seven measures comparing a service that many people—healthcare providers and patients alike—consider the most critical any hospital can provide,” Clark wrote.

Data collected in 2011 and early 2012 also tracked how long it took for an ER patient to be seen by a healthcare professional and how long the wait was to get a bed if they needed admission. Other data showed how long patients spent in the ER before being sent home and whether they received a brain scan if they might have suffered a stroke.

Clark interviewed Dr. Jesse Pines, an emergency room doctor and researcher who directs the center for healthcare quality at George Washington University.

“The theory is that when hospitals report this information, it makes them focus on it, and improve throughout their [Emergency Department],” Pines was quoted as saying.

“But it’s very hard to do. Certain performance measures are easier to fix—like simple process measures like giving patients an aspirin—than improving ED throughput, which involves development of interdisciplinary teams.”

Pines told Clark the public focus good pushes hospital administrators to focus on the emergency room as well as other metrics.

The database said Loma Linda Medical Center's emergency department had 11,848 patients, with 2 percent leaving before being seen. Southwest Healthcare had 40,399 patients with 1 percent leaving before being seen.

Compare hospitals in the area by visiting the Hospital Compare website. Then type in your ZIP code, city or local hospital. When a list of hospitals is displayed, put a checkmark next to two or three hospitals. Scroll down to a yellow button labeled Compare Now, and click to display more details. Look for a tab called Timely and Effective Care and click that.

It is so sad that our state has allowed this to happen. I remember a few years ago when the TVUSDRead More budget was horrible and teacher's were given less than $100.00 to budget their classrooms. Teachers are allowed to ask for donations but can no longer "require" students to bring in supplies for the classroom. PARENT'S need to step up to the plate!! After all these are OUR children and it's our responsibility to help them get the best education they can get. As long as people have the "entitlement" attitude with the public school system I can only see thing getting worse and not better. Please parents, help your teacher's. It does not take a fortune to pick up something extra for the classroom while buying your own child school supplies. Just my opinion!!

I second that thought. A roller rink would be great for the kids and "big kids", alike! IRead More recall the fun times going to the roller rink, bowling alley, parks and movies throughout Spring and Summer breaks. There was always the crystal ball spinning on the ceiling during skate contests while the DJ played, "Too Hot", from Cool and the Gang! LOL!!!

Nicholas: One thing ... not a nice thing ... which has not been commented upon very much is theRead More fact that this attack carried a "double sting." Not only was it directed against Americans (and their visitors for the Marathon) on "Patriot's Day" in Boston, but sundown on that terrible day marked the 65th Anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel ... at the very instant of which, in 1947, all of the surrounding Arab States simultaneously attacked. This was, if you will, "a double blow" ... and undoubtedly a "double 'Islalmic Terrorist' "Statement." Joseph B. Hudson, Jr., Esq., Fallbrook - (Member, American Society of International Law).

I never felt being Canadian that I would ever come close to losing my sisters to a terrorist attack.Read More Both of them flew to Boston from desperate parts of Canada. Mi youngest sister trained for 5 years qualifying to get in only to injure herself last year . So this was a big event this year for us . When I first heard there where bombs at the finish lines I spent 3 hours wrenched with fear , anger not being able to find out where my sisters where and if they are ok. About 4:00 pacific I heard from my mother that my lil sister crossed the finish line and was 4 blocks away looking for my other sister who was there to cheer her on . Thank God my sister was a fast runner at 3:24 she was out of the area but my other sister was not and saw the carnage just disgusting !... I am bringing here to Temecula for some Rest and happier vacation
