LETTER TO THE EDITOR: EMWD Provides Safe Drinking Water

The following letter from Eastern Municipal Water District was prompted by recent news articles about a report from the State Water Resources Control Board.

In response to the March 18, 2013, article on the Patch.com network (), Eastern Municipal Water District would like to assure its customers that the potable water supply delivered to their homes and workplaces is of the highest quality.

The recently-released report by the State Water Resources Control Board described some untreated groundwater sources through the Inland region as contaminated. It is important that our stakeholders understand that the samples tested by the state agency were for untreated groundwater.

All potable water delivered by EMWD has gone through an extensive treatment process. That water meets and often exceeds all state and federal drinking water quality standards. Additionally, groundwater is a small piece of EMWD’s overall water supply portfolio.

EMWD has gone more than two decades without a water quality violation. Should a violation ever occur, EMWD has a comprehensive program in place to notify the public about any potential public health risks.

As the state agency mentioned in its report, 98 percent of statewide groundwater systems ultimately deliver safe and reliable drinking water, including those groundwater sources used by EMWD.
