Local Legislator's Transparency Bill Killed

Kevin Jeffries' bill would have required bill texts to be published at least 24 hours before legislators vote on them.

A committee shot down a bill authored by a local legislator today.

The Assembly Rules Committee held a hearing on the bill, called ACA 1, but it was killed on a party-line vote, according to Kevin Jeffries, the author of the bill.

"It is an insult to democracy that the legislature refuses to obey the same basic rules of openness and public participation that they force on local governments with the Brown Act," said Jeffries via an emailed announcement.
