Obamacare Touted As Perfect Holiday Gift For Young Californians

Covered California, the state’s marketplace for the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, has launched a holiday campaign aimed at getting more young people signed up for health insurance.

“Californians may find something special under the tree this holiday season: the gift of health,” stated a Covered California news release announcing the “Give the Gift of Health” campaign.

The campaign includes a web page (https://www.CoveredCA.com/pledge) where residents can make a pledge to get loved ones covered. Some family members or friends may choose to help young adults by paying for a month or more of their health insurance premium.

According to Covered California, about 1.8 million of the state’s residents between the ages of 18 and 29 are eligible to purchase insurance through the exchange or will likely qualify for no-cost or low-cost Medi-Cal.

Other gift giving options touted as part of the campaign include an e-card that can be sent to friends and family with a personal message and more information about their options for insurance through Covered California, including low-cost or no-cost Medi-Cal; or a pledge certificate that can be presented to loved ones during the holidays as a symbol of your willingness to help them get insured.

The website also features tips for starting a discussion with friends and family about health insurance.

Want to get more answers about Covered California and the state's health insurance marketplace? On Dec. 7, from 2-6 p.m., the Islamic Society of Corona and Norco located at 465 Santana Way in Corona will host a health care coverage education and enrollment fair. Experts will be on hand to explain health care options — including individual insurance plans, eligibility for federal subsidies and qualification for low-cost or no-cost Medi-Cal coverage — to residents.

Consumers who bring proof of legal residency, social security numbers for members of their households and proof of income can work with an on-site “certified enrollment counselor” or “certified insurance agent” to select a health insurance plan that suits their medical needs and budget.

SA Thank you for your clarity, again. I have absolutely no doubt that it is voices such as yours - ignorant and despicable in equal measure; lacking any perspective or sense; hateful of your fellow citizens as much as your president - that will ensure your party will remain out of national power, like in California, for many years to come. Keep it up, please.

@SN Selfie with three people? Interesting. You so-called conservatives are a riot. Yeah, our Muslim, Kenyan president hates the country and our military personnel will use force against the Marxist usurper! I love it. Rule of law and democracy be damned. The white supremacist right wing fringe knows best! Forget the Supreme Court and the rest of the commies. Not to force reality on any of you but my personal business has bugger all to do with my support of the ACA. Do you read the business pages of reputable newspapers? The ACA is already helping millions of citizens and will get even better with time. Soon none of us will have to be embarrassed by our health care system - only of the knuckle draggers who hate 47% (?) of the country's population. Oy Vey!
SA December 12, 2013 at 06:29 PM
@Teri b … I want some of your income as well, since I took an oath to protect this country I deserve payment directly from you … It is amazing that the socialism in this country is being fueled by it’s own citizens … Teri do you really think the government will give you a Band-Aid when you have booboo? ACA is socialism bottom line…. Government was in place to do one thing to protect citizens from foreign and domestic harm …. I do not know why that is so hard to comprehend!
ChrisG December 12, 2013 at 07:04 PM
@Teri b, couple things. You are right that the ACA has helped millions of Americans. It has helped millions get their health insurance cancelled. And you bring up the State of California and it oligarchy democratic ruling class as a model of how the US should be. Are you serious? California used to be the 7th largest economy in the world now the 9th and shrinking. CA used to feed the world, no longer. Education rankings sliding to below 50% comparative. Debt increasing. Unemployment higher than most. Cities filing for bankruptcy. Within the top 5 highest taxed state by any measure. This is the sort of thing that happens with single party rule. You like this?
teri b December 12, 2013 at 08:17 PM
Chris You have got the ACA all wrong but if the Mass example doesn't make sense to you, so be it. I think it's an important move forward, as I've said. My point about California is that the GOP has lost its way here completely and it's not getting any better. The nuts are killing it as a national force and that's certainly not good for the country. I personally wouldn't want to live in any other state and I see it's problems as much more complex than the now permanent Democratic (super) majority. All the best and may the best arguments win in the country.

SA If you're a public servant, retired or otherwise, you do get some of my income. You're most welcome. Your understanding of classical liberalism, our founding ideology, is woefully superficial and thin. How do you think contracts and markets will work without the government? Please, we have some wonderful community colleges in our state. If you're interested in understanding basic and fundamental politics - John Locke would be a good place to start - try getting into a Pol 1 class. It could change your life! I've suggested TR Reid's book and documentary "Sick Around the World" if you're really interested in health care. Your calling the ACA socialism doesn't advance anyone's understanding either - Heritage Foundation, Romney-style socialism? Now our military and its system of benefits, that's socialism!
teri b December 12, 2013 at 09:49 PM
SN. Fox News has done a real number on you. Funny how the Civil War rolls off right-wing tongues so easily these days. I'm sure our president's mixed race (we all are, of course!) has nothing whatever to do with it but why support the side with the weakest and most ignorant of arguments? Surely we can learn from the long history of structural inequality and subsequent bloodiest of stupid wars to know what side to support. Your view of our president and current political, economic and social context is a caricature. It really is incumbent on all citizens to do much better than regurgitate partisan talking points. You should embrace a more promiscuous attitude toward information sources. Try the NY Times for a fortnight and see how you get on.

"Surely we can learn from the long history of structural inequality and subsequent bloodiest of stupid wars to know what side to support." - terib ___________________________________________________ Oh brother. Elaborate on this will you? Which structures and wars.
ChrisG December 13, 2013 at 12:46 AM
I find it amusing whenever an extreme leftist or rightist calls the other for being bad for the country when their behaviors are identical. Both suck!
SA December 13, 2013 at 12:17 PM
@Teri … Wow “military is socialism” … I elected to join not told and if I was told I would proudly have gone, unlike any Democrat / Liberal as I love my country… That being said, there is still conscription… However if you want to be told what to buy go to North Korea, I heard executions are lovely over there this time of year…
teri b December 13, 2013 at 12:44 PM
@Chris, SA etc... It's been fun lads. I hope you realize eventually that the only extremists here and in the country at the moment are those that have characterized centrist positions - see "Sick Around the World! - as Stalinist and our patriotic, moderate president as a hater of the country. Thankfully, it looks like the Speaker of the House is starting to fight back but the nonsense that's been imbibed and that streams out of the right wing media all day long has done tremendous damage. Again, I would recommend community college courses though you'd find out how little we've invested as a state over the last couple of decades. Here's my last shocking revelation...I make about 150K per year and think I'm terribly under-taxed! Yes, I lived in Europe for many years - did my PhD at the London School of Economics - and find that Americans know so little of the rest of the world and of their own country and its history that the slightest improvement or change to the social contract is seen as a threat. That's basically, I think, because it's largely private for-profit interests that shape the culture and imagination of citizens here. (Conservatives seem to have completely forgotten that market failures are ubiquitous - who's going to stop companies from dumping toxic crap and protect public health if not for government?) We need to start taking advantage of high quality journalism, such as it is, and be more interested in reality. PBS, NPR, the NY Times are the major ones worth spending time with but also international sources like Britain's Guardian or Independent newspapers, the BBC etc...Also, citizens need to travel more and learn from others. Take care and have a wonderful holiday season.
John Smith December 13, 2013 at 12:52 PM
You have to love the Leftist arrogance as things fall apart for them. People like Teri B only represent 20% of the U.S. population and fake majority status while calling those that oppose them extreme. Yes Teri it is extreme when intelligent people oppose irrational retards like you.
SA December 13, 2013 at 01:05 PM
@Teri …Under taxed are you insane? (Tells me u do not work and like to fib a bit) Why take more? DC is by far the wealthiest place in our country and DC does not produce ANYTHING but taxes and fees … Extrapolate that … You won’t be able to other than to say “racist” ….
John Smith December 13, 2013 at 01:13 PM
SA Teri B lives in Libtard opposite world. In her world jobs are created when the rich are taxed more. Obamacare is a success when the MAJORITY pay way more in health insurance premiums to cover a minority of people. The IRS didn't target anyone. Obama is the most transparent President EVER. And the 5 million Obama has spent to hide his work and college records MEANS nothing. Conservatives are racist bigoted homophobes that want to destroy water , air and the environment. AND PRESIDENT OBAMA NEVER EVER LIES....EVER. 37% and falling.....
John Smith December 13, 2013 at 01:22 PM
The biggest lie of 2013..."If you like your plan you can keep your plan...PERIOD. If you like your doctor you can keep your doctore...PERIOD." Not just said once but 27 times!!! In October 2014 when TENS OF MILLIONS of insurance cancellation notices are sent out this LIE is going to KILL Democrats in Nov. 14. Obama is now a gift unto himself.
SA December 13, 2013 at 02:17 PM
@Mr. Smith, I do not need health care at this point in my life, I live what I think an extremely healthy life @ 35 … Why should I pay for anyone? … All of your points are so spot on it is sickening other than the fall of Democrats … Why should anyone give personal information before picking a plan? Why should anyone be ordered to pick a plan or be penalized? It should be “it is there if you need it but did not use it then don’t cry, but if you use it pay for it … not the other guy’s problem” …
John Smith December 13, 2013 at 02:57 PM
People like Teri B are dangerous. They are either knowingly Marxist or Marxist sympathizers OR.... IGNORANT and being lead by Marxists but are too stupid to realize it.
John Smith December 13, 2013 at 04:59 PM
I am buying my oldest son Obamacare... Here is the message on the XMAS card: Dear son enclosed is your new health insurance policy. I paid for the first 2 months. Although it is more expensive than it used to be and the out of pocket expenses and deductibles have tripled keep in mind your extra expense is helping to pay for Grandma and Granpa's health plan . I know its not fair because your income and assets are a fraction of theirs but that is the reality of Obamacare. Love Dad
ChrisG December 13, 2013 at 05:03 PM
Thanks John! My eyes are watering I'm laughing so hard.
joe scalero December 13, 2013 at 05:33 PM
I have just confirmed through a very reliable person at the Patch, that John Smith and Steve Newman are the same person. This is 100 % true. No big surprise, but an interesting fact. Ok "guys" , lets hear the denials.
ChrisG December 13, 2013 at 05:41 PM
@joe, I don't believe it!
SA December 13, 2013 at 06:03 PM
@Joe, if that is so I feel bad for him as due to the ACA he won’t be able to afford treatment and medication for his Schizophrenia, or even if he could there will not be treatment…
John Smith December 13, 2013 at 06:12 PM
I am John Smith no relation to Steve Newman
joe scalero December 13, 2013 at 06:45 PM
As predicted....Steve and John, or John and Steve...please leave the comment section for serious commentary and discussion. My source did indeed violate the law, that's the first accurate comment you've made in awhile. Is it now time to create a 3rd alias? Please, no more denials, my source is 100% confirmed.
ChrisG December 13, 2013 at 06:53 PM
Please explain to me how any law was broken? Please explain to me why anyone would care if SN and JS are the same person. Either agree or disagree with posts. My favorite line so far from Steve Newman, "Name your source or shut the f up- loser- stalker- racist". Lol
John Smith December 13, 2013 at 07:48 PM
Brit Hume....and why Obamacare is Obamafail "Has anyone actually obtained a health policy via http://Healthcare.gov ? Not just "signed up," or "enrolled," but bought & paid for?"
joe scalero December 13, 2013 at 08:14 PM
ChrisG, I agree, we shouldn't really care that Steve Newman and John Smith are the same person, I just thought since it was 100% confirmed, that it was an interesting fact to share. As far as the ACA, history will tell if works or is a bust.
SA December 14, 2013 at 01:16 PM
This morning was history and it was a bust then…
ChrisG December 14, 2013 at 05:39 PM
@steve. I suggest you reread the terms of service you agreed to when you signed up for the patch. They can do whatever they like with your emails at any time. The terms can be changed at any time they wish.
joe scalero December 14, 2013 at 07:24 PM
Steve/John consolidate your identities and stay focused on the issues
