Old Town Stop Signs Up for Final Vote

The City Council set to approve new stop signs on the busy streets of Old Town.

New stop signs aim to make pedestrians and motorists safer in Old Town.

The is scheduled to vote on the new signs at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Civic Center. for the location.

The proposed signs would be on Old Town Front Street at Third Street, Fourth Street and Fifth Street and Mercedes Street at Sixth Street.

Although the volume of traffic falls below the criteria to install stop signs, the Public Works Department recommends they be installed anyway.

There is flexibility in the criteria, and there is a need to control left-turn conflicts and conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles along Front Street, a city agenda report stated.

In addition, the Farmers Market and the Mary Phillips Senior Center generate high pedestrian volumes and, with limited visibility, the stop signs will help keep Old Town visitors safe, the report stated.

The city has adequate funds available in the Traffic Division’s Fiscal Year 2011-2012 operating budget to install the signs and associated pavement markings.
