Temecula City Council Approves City Manager Contract

In late May, Aaron Adams was named the permanent Temecula city manager, and on June 11 his new four-year contract was unanimously approved by the city council with a 4-0 vote.

Eighteen years ago and fresh out of college, Aaron Adams was hired as an intern at Temecula City Hall.

Now he is officially Temecula's city manager.

In late May, Adams, who is in his early 40s, was named the permanent Temecula city manager, and on June 11 his new four-year contract was unanimously approved by the city council with a 4-0 vote. Mayor Mike Naggar was absent for Tuesday's meeting.

Adams' annual salary is $192,000, but under the terms of his contract he is eligible for pay increases.

“You certainly earned the right to sit in that seat and have that title so godspeed to you,” Temecula Mayor Mike Naggar said to Adams during the May 28 city council meeting. “We are going to do great things with you at the helm.”

Except for a stint as a management analyst for the City of San Clemente in 1995, Adams has continuously worked at Temecula City Hall. He has held positions such as management analyst, senior management analyst, assistant city manager, executive community services director, and most recently, acting and interim city manager.

Adams holds a bachelor's degree in business administration and human resources management from Northern Arizona University and a master's degree in management and international business from the University of Redlands.

In December 2012, Adams was promoted from executive community services director to acting city manager when City Council voted to place then-City Manager Bob Johnson on administrative leave.

Johnson was formally terminated Nov. 27, 2012 due to "differences in management philosophy and goals," city officials said at the time. --Maggie Avants contributed to this story.
