Temecula Population Getting Older

New census data show increase in average age.

Temecula has a reputation of being a family friendly community, and recent data released by the Census Bureau reflects that.

The median age edged up by 2 years during the last decade. In 2000, it was 31.4 years. That number bumped up to 33.4 years old by 2010, the bureau states.

The biggest age group also got older. In 2000, the biggest age group was people 5-9 years. They made up 10.5 percent of Temecula's population.

The Census Bureau reports that in 2010, the biggest age group changed to people 10-14 years old, with that group making up 9.5 percent of the total population.

The age group growing the fastest was 45-49 year olds which grew 113 percent. That age group increased 4,540 people during the last decade.

In 2000, that age group made up 6.9 percent of the total population with 3,965 people, and in 2010, that group made up 8.5 percent of the total population numbering 8505 people.

Families chose to move to Temecula in droves as evidenced by the explosion in housing developments and high sales of single family residences in the early part of the decade.

“We decided to move to Temecula in 1999 due to the reputation the area had for being a family friendly community and of course the reasonable housing prices,” said resident Matt Smith, 44. “We do have several friends who have had to relocate to other parts of the country for work.”

Other residents echoed Smith's feelings.

“Our friends moved here and raved about the number of young families and people our age living in Temecula,” said Regina Moore, 39. “We took a leap of faith and packed up the family and moved here a few years ago.”

The mediterranean climate and area amenities draw a wide age range of people to Temecula.

“My wife and I moved here from Scottsdale 4 years ago when we decided enough was enough in regards to the scorching heat,” said James Moore, 53.

“We meet with a wonderful group of friends every week for golf and are thrilled with this wonderful city and all it has to offer.”

It is so sad that our state has allowed this to happen. I remember a few years ago when the TVUSDRead More budget was horrible and teacher's were given less than $100.00 to budget their classrooms. Teachers are allowed to ask for donations but can no longer "require" students to bring in supplies for the classroom. PARENT'S need to step up to the plate!! After all these are OUR children and it's our responsibility to help them get the best education they can get. As long as people have the "entitlement" attitude with the public school system I can only see thing getting worse and not better. Please parents, help your teacher's. It does not take a fortune to pick up something extra for the classroom while buying your own child school supplies. Just my opinion!!

A skating rink with ice is more desirable. Temecula and Murrieta have lots of kids involved in iceRead More skating and hockey, but have to drive to Escondido or Riverside to participate.
